New Build with E6420

Thread Starter
Hi guys
I'm thinking of building a new system since my old 2.8 p4 is kicking it anymore.

I'm new to the overclocking world but I'm sure I'll pick it up fairly quick.

My choices so far for this build is

Intel Core 2 Duo E6420 Conroe 2.13GHz
ASUS P5N32-E SLI LGA 775 or ASUS Striker Extreme
CORSAIR XMS2 1GB 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 x4
EVGA 256-P2-N624-AR GeForce 7900GS 256MB

I'm going with this build since I'm looking to do SLI. I know I'm missing acouple of things like power supply and cooling but I just wanna get a general idea from everyone on this. If you can also give me some choices on power supplies, cooling, or anything else I'm may need that would be awesome. The case I'm using will be my alienware case that my current 2.8 lives in now. Let me know everyone!

Thanks
Old Man

What's your budget like for the complete build?
first of all, DX10 is out!!! dont be using old dx9 cards anymore!!! also, for your motherboard, i would go with one of the new p35 chipsets from asus and gigabyte.

my budget is ranging to around 1300 for everything except harddrives and the case (got the alienware p1 case). I'm willing to waste alil more if need for a good performance increase.

My current pc is a 2.8 p4-ht, intel board(never checked it came with the alienware), 128mb 9800 pro ati, 2 gb ddr400, etc.... point is its old lol

DX10 is pointless right now, theres like, 2 games that use 'sub-dx10' DX9 will be fine for another year or 2. The only DX10 card out now that will play DX10 comfortably in 1.5ish years time when dx10 becomes mainstream is the 8800GTX.

And to the original poster. Scrap the 7900GS for something thats more powerful like an X1950Pro, X1950XT or a 7950GT. X1950XT being the strongest out of the 3. Those 3 are more powerful than any midrange DX10 card. And they'll hold you over till DX10 becomes mainstream. and THATS the point you should buy a DX10 card as you'll know what can and cant play DX10 games comfortably.
