Today's addition of Zelda II to the US Virtual Console will see the service reach the 100 games mark, Nintendo announced on Friday.

Super Mario Bros. has been the most popular game so far, followed by Super Mario 64, Mario Kart 64, Super Mario World and The Legend of Zelda.

The platform holder says it has charted 4.7 million downloads since the US service went live on 19th November.

Currently the US VC list sits at 96 available games according to Wikipedians, so we can also assume that Zelda II (NES, 500 Wii points) will be joined by a trio of others.

"With an Internet connection rate reaching 40 percent, Wii owners have more options than ever to find the kinds of games they love to play," Nintendo of America's George Harrison said, marking the occasion.

"Beyond the Wii Shop Channel, all types of people are getting connected and checking out the information and entertainment options available on the Wii Menu. Whether voting, creating a Mii or just checking the weather, everyone has a favourite channel."

Last Friday's European Virtual Console releases (rounded up in our weekly reviews column) brought the European total to 96 as well.

I'm still waiting for Rare's games (Goldeneye and Perfect Dark).

Edit - And now that I think about, why are there ONLY 100 titles. You can easily (and I mean easily) download every NES, SNES, and probably every N64 game right now.

No I know. I was just saying that making those types of copies of old Nintendo games has already been done for years now. So why is it taking Nintendo so long to get them online for the Virtual Console?

To give someone something to look forward to and build up to....Halo 3 is done...Why dont they release it now....To build up hype...Once Goldeneye is finally released....People are going to eat it up like crazy...Just like Halo 3...

They also want to make sure it plays well on the wii's. It would be bad if a bug showed up that would be easily avoided. Their credibility would be shot. Personally I'm willing to wait a while and know that a game I buy will work perfectly.

100 ****ty titles. Mostly games I'm not into, nor would ever consider
RE-paying for. Super Mario 64 - own it. yep thats about it...

Nintendo should have included a way to input the serial # on the back
of the game so you could just get it because you already own it.
(As 1000's of Wii owners rush to GameCraze and used game stores)
