- Make it easier to do things as root (without having to enter the password each time, etc)
- Make WINE easier to use, let people double-click EXEs to run them.

I'm dual-booting Vista and XP now.
odd... there wasn't anything i needed to do at the shell level that i couldn't do in the gui with Ubuntu... You can change the "login as root" for eveything important... and once wine is installed and configured... all i do is dbl-click on the icon to start a windows app... even the latest games...

and NTFS write/read shouldn't be a problem either... (Fuse)

The way I read it, he was having trouble accessing his Linux drive from XP using special utilities.

It is a totally different Operating System... Why should it Operate the same?

Windows doesn't have native support for ext2/3 file systems... though it's not hard at all to load the File system driver to make accessing your linux partitions transparent...

Thread Starter
I realize Windows couldn't read it on its own. I was using a linux utility, which did not see the linux partitions.

I'd like to correct myself though; maybe I don't mean "make Linux more like Windows", just "make Linux a bit more new-user-friendly." Whether or not it's a first computer, the command line is boggling, and doubtless it's going to be complicated to get on your feet, windows or not, but Ubuntu doesn't seem to do much to help you through it.

Oh, and none of the tutorials I had to look at ever gave me a GUI version of any command. Take this one: "echo "et.x86 0 0 direct" > /proc/asound/card0/pcm0p/oss"
I also have absolutely no idea what it DOES, thanks to all the abbreviated commands...

that is the beauty of linux...if you know the commands. but if you don't then linux still has the pretty GUI to use. so if you don't know the commands, just don't use them. and if a site says to use them to install a program, just copy and paste, they usually give you exactly what you need.

took me a while to really start liking linux, at first I HATED it; the more I learned though the more I wanted to learn. At this point I'm still not real graceful about it but I can usually do what I need to, but soon it will be OV for the windows partitions on my puter

Remember that it's not Windows, just like OSX is not Windows. It takes some practice to learn, but it's not impossible.
