Hard Drive Imaging...

Well, I was basically wondering... How do you do it?

What program do you need/recommended for it, and how does one go about USING the image once it's made, and what medium is it stored to?

I've had to reinstall XP and Vista 64 about 100 times now for various reasons and I'm kind of tired of it. And tired of reinstalling games, and various applications, and reconfiguring those applications, etc etc etc.

So if anyone can help me out, I'd appreciate it!

I like Norton Ghost, there's also Acronis (never used it, but supposed to be really good).

As far as free ones, you can make an UBCD4WIN and it has some nice imaging utilities. (I've had great success with Drive Image XML.)

I've only really used Drive Image XML and Ghost, so those are the only 2 I could recommend. Though I've heard lots of good stuff about Acronis, so it should be OK too.

Normally you'll either image to CD(s) or DVD(s).

While waiting for a response, I googled "hard drisk cloning" and Acronis did come up, so I 'found' a version of it. Problem is... Blue screen after installation. It's probably the fact that I'm using Vista X64 though. I'm not sure if that changes anything for your suggestions or not though, but Acronis didn't like me.

You might go ahead and make an UBCD4WIN and try Drive Image XML, select the "RAW" mode when making the image, that should take it, other than that, haven't had any customers with Vista need an image yet, so can't really say... :/

to my knowledge, Acronis doesnt work on vista of as yet, let alone the x64 vista.

I use Acronis 8 and 9 all time for my win2k/winXp imaging needs (and some linux version of it as well for my fedora and kubuntu installs)

its quite handy.
