AA/AF Questions

Thread Starter
Some games have these in their options, others do not. If they don't, is forcing them in the driver software a good idea?

Also, what happens when in a specific game's settings it allows up to x8. What happens if you enable x8 but in drivers select x16? Which gets used? Will there be a graphical enhancement? etc...

The rig below is pretty high-end, would it be a good/bad idea to turn on AA and AF to max at all times? (rather than use app setting)

If a game does not support it, will it hinder performance AND image quality?

In most case, setting via driver software is fine.

If you set if via driver, you override the game settings. If you set it as "Application-Controlled", then you use the game settings.

Yes, turn on as much AA and AF as you can. Just make sure the frame rates are acceptable to you (50-60FPS minimums). Usually drop AA before AF since AF is cheaper to perform.

I found that enabling AA by way of the driver (in both ATI and nvidia cards) kills your fps. Leaving it at "application setting" and setting AA by way of the game options does not do this, while still using AA. AF does not seem to have this problem and I usually set it to 16x since it's not that taxing as AA.
If you set, for example, 4x AA on the driver, and 8x on the game, the driver will overwrite the in game settings (that's what it's supposed do do anyways). However, if the game only supports up to a certain level of AA, that's the highest it will go, regardless of driver settings.
