simple upgrade gets complicated...

Thread Starter
First off my system was almost 2 years old:
Abit AA8XE
evga 6800GT
P4 650 HT 3.4ghz
enermax whisper II 460W
audigy 2ZS

I decided to go for my 3rd VGA upgrade (7800GT CO, 7900GT KO) and got an 8800GTS 320mb. I had never had any problems. So I install the new card, go to try out some BF2 with it and notice I can't log in, no network ***?? Then I realize I have no sound either. Device manager is telling me my NIC cannot be started and my sound card doesn't even show up at all. I try the usual troubleshooting steps which included reformatting and reinstalling XP pro SP2, flashing my mobo bios. I was then thinking PSU, so I put the 6800GT in and had the same problems. Realizing that 3 vga upgrades on existing hardware is pushing the limits, I order a new motherboard, PSU, and a few other minor goodies. While I waited for my order, I put the 8800 back in and did some testing on single player games etc.

I ran FEAR settings test at 1600x1200, all settings max, soft shadows off, 2XAA, 4XAF and got average of 44fps. I had a very small percentage below 25 ( can't remember exact number).

So anyway my new stuff arrives, the evga 680i LT mobo, a 600W enermax, a zalman 9500, and a silverstone FM121 for my rear case exhaust. It's all set up and running like a champ. However, my old P4 is now running way hotter (was 39C idle, 49 load) than ever on the old motherboard even with the zalman, previously stock. I'm guessing its days are numbered (E6420 coming soon!). It's idling at 49C and under load hitting in the mid 50's.

So I run the same FEAR settings test, same settings and rez on the new mobo and PSU and get average 68 fps with 0% under 25fps!!

Can't wait to pop a C2D in it!

16xAA 16xAF Image Quality set to "High Quality", 3% under 25fps on my rig, I forget the average FPS to lazy to load the game...

Edit:
Scrap that!! Ain't bench'd with new settings xD

16xAA-16xAF-1280x1024-High Quality.
Average 87fps, Minimum 42fps, 0% below 25fps.

Obviously I'l score higher with those settings running on the lower res, 1280x1024.

oh so its a possiblility that the temps on the P4 are the same, however different sensors are reporting it different. I read a couple threads on processor temps and I'm very confused about it, I have speedfan and everest, I was using speedfan to check them on the old set-up.

LOL i got scared thinking the P4 was going to burst into flames and ordered an E6420 this morning!
