Which 939 CPU to buy?

OK- here's the deal. I have a Sandy 3700+ ( KACAE) that I have running at 2.8 24/7. I got a little antsy , and decided to get an Opty 165. Got one last Friday from the Egg for @$125 bucks. Can't get it stable above 2530.... not delighted with this board, so I'm thinking of getting a DFI, but that's another thread.

SO, I noticed that the Opty 165 dropped to $105 over the weekend ((*$%($**@#$)), and was cursing my luck when.... hey, CPU-Z shows this puppy as a Toledo core! I paid for a Denmark!!

Promptly got Newegg in a chat, and Jesus gave me free shipping on the RMA.

So,, I'm wondering what to replace it with? Probably not gonna chance the 165 again, as I have no idea what core I'd get......... maybe I should take a look over at Tankguys.../

Hey, I'm open to suggestions , here!

CPU-Z (no matter what version) reports all dual-core Opterons (Denmark cores, via AMD's marketing) as Toledos. It's not a bug, it's what's encoded onto the chip.

Hope this helps (kinda sucks you RMAd a perfectly good chip...).

I saw the 170 and 175 Opty are pretty cheap there now a higher X would probably let you OC it higher...

Yes, I know that. My point was.... I had an excuse to RMA it, and it worked. 2530 on an Opty 165 isn't really my idea of a "perfectly good chip"... but, I guess we have different standards.

Thanks for the advice Ira.... I knew I could count on you to read.

This 3800+ X2 is a mad overclocker with the toledo core, I haven't heard of anyone getting any less than 2600. Plus it was only $83 for S939

At the risk of provoking conflict, I thought I just have to say that I knew that this was your point.

I personally think it's borderline dishonest to RMA a totally functional component. Just because it doesn't meet your expectations for it when you do overclock it is no justification to return it to the seller/manufacturer.

CPUs are sold at the price they're sold for for their performance at their stated stock speed. I don't buy the BS that someone pays for a CPU for its supposed overclocking potential; you pay for its stock performance, and any extra speed you squeeze from it is merely bonus. Overclocking is a total lottery, and returning a working chip just because it doesn't clock as well as you assumed it would is just not right, in my opinion.

But whatever...

You're exactly right. I guess my own standards are different from yours.
