Help with a bet from a friend about a Dell

Thread Starter
Well to all the case modders here on OCN this is probably a challenge that everyone has had presented to them. A friend of mine saw my new tower (TT armor modded) for the first time this week. He liked it and asked how much one cost and when I told him his jaw dropped and he said do you really have to spend that much to get a cool case. I said NO of course not. So he told me to mod his dell case to make it just as sweet. At first I was like not possible, but then decided to take this bold statement and put myself to work on modding a Dell case. Now this is where the problem arises. I don't have a dell case lying around. And his Dell is his only computer so I can’t mod it. Now I wish I was back at the University because I could buy an old dell case for 10-15 bucks. Then I thought that maybe there are some people here that would have a bunch of Dell cases lying around that they were never going to use. I will pay for shipping (preferably under 15$) to Missouri zip 64507. I will be keeping a detailed log and will be attempting to do this all on a budget of 100$ or less and less is better. This includes all fans, paint, material, and such. No hardware will be in this budget. It just needs to be similar in comparison to what you get with a TT armor. The less that is spent the better.

So I am looking for donations of a Dell case that someone would like to see modded that they have absolutely no need for and want out of there way. It does need to be a mid tower or bigger. Once I get/ if I get, a case to attempt this on I will post ideas I have and also take suggestions.

Honestly I just really like the idea of ripping apart a Dell. Maybe that’s just me. Though I should talk to loud cause I just passed my Dell onto my little brother. If only I would have modded it first.

Well if anyone wants to jump in on this please let me know.

It depends on the gen of the dell case.

It is totaly possibly with the all steel versions, IE: 2300+. Not so much with the other versions.

Good luck, I love my modded HP tower..

not completely true, but it would take some work... either using alot of bondo or hacking a new front panel together.
the XPS cases maybe, those are rather sturdy, but i don't think they sell those XD

[begin modding rambling/musings, skip or highlight to read XD]
lesse. you good w/ metal work or DIY stuff?
*i'd get a great big sheet of aluminum/steel (ur call, steel's cheaper) and make a new front. give it a multi-elevation face (chop up scraps and grind edges smooth) with a split to let internal lighting out down the middle or in a diagonal or "x" or whatever. steel's tougher to work with tho, i like using aluminum but it's expensive T-T
*you could even make a front intake on the bottom, use a few strips of mesh on the faceplate and give it a "mouth". you could just do that rather than rebuild the front.
*take the sidepanel and give it a little "tetris zigzag piece" to show the parts, have a vga-mesh vent in the extra spot
*cut a shape/stencil of your choice into the top of the case and use bondo on the rest to flatten the remaining area
*give it a gloss (not necessarily mirror) paint job and a light source

[/end rambling]

My projected mods for a dell case if I get one.

1) Side Window which will be ether the standard acrylic or maybe I will just some perforated metal (modders mesh) to allow better airflow in the case.
2) Blow hole in top. This will require much attention depending on the case, many don’t have much room between the drivebays and the psu so measuring and planing will be key. I would say that a blowhole is a must on this so it will be worked out one way or another.
3) Front panel rework, this is hard to plan without know what the front panel will look like or attach. Most dells have the usb, headphones, and mic ports somewhere in the front. Those will be relocated to allow an intake fan.
4) 120 fan front intake
5) 120 fan exhaust
6) Try a make some sort of wire management possible. Could be very hard to do but an attempt will be made
7) Paint inside of case.
8) Paint outside of case. This will be quite a chore if I decide to sand down the rough plastic that dell uses to make a nice smooth finish. Will have to use laptop-painting techniques.
9) Color scheme will decided at a later date, and will depend on theme/feel of the case. So cases just need to look dark and others bright. We will see what this case’s personality will be.
10) And of course some sort of lighting, cold cathodes, LED’s.

Budget as I have it worked out
1) metal 20$
2) paint 30$
3) fans 20$
4) lights 10$

Total 80$ now this probably seems like a lot but I am want to make sure I overestimate rather than under. I have much of the supplies that will be used all ready but I will keep track of usage and count it in the budget. 24X20 left over perforated metal, some black and blue spray paint. The fans I hope to pick up some used ones.

The ONE cool thing about dells are the mounting of drives and power supplies on the wall opposite the mobo so that the case opens like a briefcase and gives you room to reach ytour hands in there.

I have checked Craigslist and eBay both. Craigslist just got nothing really. Ebay everyone I have found so far is 30$ or so with shipping I am still monitoring that. I am not trying to be greedy here but I can’t see myself paying 30$ for a Dell case when sooner or later I will find free ones are real cheap ones. I could buy a lot of cases that would be easier to mod for 30$.

Right now I am in Missouri working. If I have to I’ll wait till I head back to Iowa State University in the fall and buy one from the “surplus store” which is where ISU sell all there old computer stuff. I know I can get one there for 15 or less. Just though other people might have one laying around.

I do and don’t like the “briefcase” design. I owned a Dell that was like that. It is easy to work on when you get it open and that is a big plus. But you have to watch your wires when you close it and wire management is difficult because of the extra length needed to open. Also you have to lay it on its side to really get anything done inside the case. Can be a pain depending on your setup.
