OS for OC'ing and testing

Thread Starter
All,

I am building a system out of spare parts (not the one in my sig) for general testing and learning.

A8N32 SLI
AMD 64 3700+ SD
2 Gigs Value Ram
GPU
random PSU
case
etc

My question is - What is a good OS I can use for fooling around. I am willing to invest some time in Linux or a limited amount of money in a legal copy of windows (what version). It would be nice to be able to play some games, but what I am after a system to really toy with a learn on - Benchmark, test...

Edit - if you have links to a cheap legal version of your reccomendation that would also help.

Any ideas?

Thanks
My System

For benchmarks you'll probably want windows - doesn't really matter what version. You have access to more monitoring tools and 3dmark/similar graphical benchmarks
