Let's say an elbow adds 1ft of restriction. Adding one elbow drops your flowrate by 1GPH. Adding a second drops it by 2.5GPH. The increase drop is caused by pump design.
Your thought makes all the sense in the world, Are those real gph numbers?

Just a note... Danger Den Delrin 90 Degree Elbows with 1/2" fittings are less restrictive that normal elbows. Of course, they also cost 5x as much....
