long MOLEX conector LEAD...WRAPED with a long SATA CABLE? Any PROB.

Hi,

I'm doing a sort of rad mod. One of the goals is to have my rig tucked away and have a small console with a cd/dvd everything rom, fan speed controls and on/of , reboot buttons on a single small desktop box.

Would like to run a singe, long (6') Molex cable with wrapped up with a 6' sata external cable, the little weenie on/of and reboot leads, and, 4, 3wire fan leads.

Questions,

1) Will the long Molex cable in such close proximity cause any interference with the sata cable, return ave fan wires, along the 6' length

2) My fan controller is rated at 20 amps, fans are 10.8 watts at full blast. Will standard Molex gauge wire be enough to drive all these fans at 6 ft? how about the fan return wires, will the standard fan wire guage work at 6 ft.

3) Any body know where I can get a hold of a long molex cabe (prety much resigned to making it my self)

Regards

It shouldn't really give any problems becuase its DC therefore it won't produce any changing interference.

1) Nope, no interference.

2) 10.8w at 12v = .9A per fan. How many fans do you wish to run? If you really are using the full 20A, you need at least 16 gauge wire. 18 gauge wire will work if you need to transfer less than 16A.

3) I can make it for you.
Once again...

Hi,

Thanks for the arithmetic and reply. I regrettably have decided not to try to run 2 10.6W. fans off of one channel. Just don’t feel like a controller melt down.

So, I guess there’s going to be 10.6W on each channel + DVD (whatever it might be…10W?). so I guess I’ll be running 50w, 5’ on basic Molex gauge wire ( I assume I’m stuck with the weakest link…. the Molex pigtail off the PSU ?).

Follow up; what about the return wires from the controller to the fans? There little pigtails are pretty wimpy looking. I can’t really break into the fans to change their pigtails, so I guess with my weakest link theory, might as well stick with 5’ length of the same gauge…no?

Thanks again

Cool. Thanks for the reply.

FYI Change of specs, the cable is now going to be 6ft'.

I regrettably have decided not to try to run two, 10.6W. fans off of one channel. Just don’t feel like a controller melt down. So, I'm just going to run 4 of those fans off the 20w x 4 controler (+DVD of the same molex).

Given that tidbit, do I need to change the guage of the long molex and fan wires? Won't the molex and fan wires be only as good as there weakest link; The relatively skinney pig tales coming out of the PSU and fans?

Um, I’m interested, if for no other reason than I don’t have a bunch of conectors (hate paying $7 to ship $2 worth the connectors)… few caveats:

1)I’d like to contain all the wire (4 x 4 fans wires and 4 molex wires) into one 10’x1/2 of PET expandable sheathing( http://jab-tech.com/Expandable-cable...ving-c-71.html ) I’ve got.. I figure it would be easiest to stuff the wires in through the sheathing, and then solder or crimp the connectors on 2nd. The last foot or so would be unsheathed for routing in the box.

2)Lastly, I’d like to replace my unconventional female fan connectors with regular Intel type standard 4 wire(connectors ) I need those thrown in (do you know what they're called?)

What would we we be talking about $$ ?

Thanks again, Croak
