alienware m5550 video card replacement

Thread Starter
I bought the 15.4" m5550 Alienware laptop from their website last week...

I don't have the laptop yet, i should in a week or so...

I got it with the WUXGA screen (1920 x 1200) and a x1400 with the 2.0 ghz core 2 duo...

I'm thinking I'm not going to be able to run much of anything at the native rez of that screen with that video card...

They had a 7600 go option on their site, but it was a $240 option...

I've been all over ebay and Google trying to find the 7600 card for this laptop and cant seem to find it anywhere...

Any ideas? I'm guessing there is a uber laptop accessory website that has it...??

Pick a graphics card with the Laptop. Make sure the graphics card that you want comes with it. DON'T try and find it else where. I personally wouldn't pick a alienware. 7600 Go is the same as whats in my Laptop. Not that great for the latest titles but the games will run with it.

for alienware laptops when you find the card, on the bottom of the laptop is 1 big screwed on panel. probably about 8 screws, take that panel off. then remove the heatsink and insert. on the m5500 the cpu and vid card share the heatsink (temps rise) it may be the same on the m5550

Check out Clevo rigs on their website. Alienware uses Clevo for some of it's notebooks with a different lid. If yours is one of the rebranded Clevo's, you can get the gpu at rjtech.com.
Also go over to the notebookreview forums and post your question. There are a lot more notebook followers over there.

i just talked to an alienware tech on the live chat...

Here is the conversation...

Quote:
Oscar F.: Thank you for connecting with Alienware’s Sales Chat Department. My name is Oscar F.. In order to better assist you, could you please tell me the country you are contacting us from?
Jo: usa
Oscar F.: Hello Jo, what can I do for you today?
Jo: i was wondering if you could tell me the MXM standard that the m5550 uses for the video card...
Oscar F.: Please hold while I look that up.
Jo: ok
Oscar F.: Just one more moment please
Jo: ok...
Jo: i know its a tough one... i looked all over the site for a good 30 minutes before i asked you...
Oscar F.: Unfortunately I was unable to find the information on the MXM standard for the m5550. Our sales department should be able to get this info for you. You can contact our Sales Department and speak with a sales agent they can be reached at 1-800-254-3692 #1 or 1-800-494-3382. They are available Monday thru Friday 9am to 11:30pm Eastern Time or e-mail us at sales@alienware.com.
Oscar F.: Thank you for being patient
Jo: alright...
Jo: thanks for your help...
Oscar F.: Thank you for choosing Alienware, have a great day!
Oscar F.: We found it
Jo: huh?
Jo: really?
Jo: what is it!!
Oscar F.: It is MXM 2
Jo: crap...
Jo: i was afraid of that...
Jo: i found a 7900GS that is MXM-3...
Jo: it wont fit in a MXM-2 slot...
Jo: o well...
Oscar F.: Unfortunately no it wont
Oscar F.: Sorry
Jo: do you know of any 7900 card that will fit in a MXM-2 slot?
Oscar F.: The only cards that I know for sure that will fit in the slot are the ones listed on the website
Jo: hmm... ok
Jo: thanks for the info...
Oscar F.: Thank you again for choosing Alienware, have a great day!
Jo: i'll do more homework on the subject...
Jo: later
Oscar F.: Bye
I bought this laptop thinking i could do a video card swap myself to a 7900 card... But I'm not sure i can find a MXM-2 7900 anywhere...

Im googleing right now...
