Amateur First Build Boot Problem

Thread Starter
I have just built my very first computer, which is an acheivement as I am only 15. I can't remember the exact specs of my comp as one of my problems is not being able to read the boot screen.

6.0Ghz Intel Pentium D Dual Core (2x3.0ghz)w/Fan
Some kind of Abit Motherboard with heatsink.
2GB Corsair 533 RAM sticks (2x1GB)
An Old 40GB IBM Deskstar 7200rpm HDD

As much as I can remember. I've got a link to the page on eBay where I bought it from:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...9048&rd=1&rd=1

Heres my Problem:

Whenever I switch it on, it runs for 10-20 seconds then turns itself off. No beeps (sorted out the beeps on my own), no error message, all leads are where they are supposed to be, the RAM sticks arent dodgy. I've got no idea what to do now. I think the PSU might have something to do with it, but I'm not sure. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Could be a number of reasons, RAM, CPU, HDD, GFX and the list goes on.
We need to know the exact components in your system, not some Abit mobo, be exact.

Make sure the CPU fan is plugged into the mobo fan header labeled CPU FAN.

-You turn it on
-It turns on
-It loads some stuff
-It turns off

After it turns off, what happens? Are you able to push the power button to turn it back on? If it's not turning back on after it's turned off, unplug your PSU wire from the back, let it sit there for 30 seconds, plug it back in and boot up again. If it does the same thing, I would say it's the PSU's fault, because I had similar problems with my old computer.

tai, no you can't turn it back on unless you switch it off at the psu switch. The power led is still on after it switches itself off. =] The lights are on but no ones home.

I'm not particularly good with the relation between the mobo and psu. Does a cpu which is more powerful use more power? I used this psu with my old computer, which I fried the mobo on. It had a 2.66ghz cpu. I dunno if thats the case...

Then I would try to get change the PSU or take some load off the PSU. Try running with 1 stick of RAM and see what happens.

I'd like to stay and help you, but I must leave for school. Final exams day.

sounds like its over heating, like grunion said make sure the cpu fan is plugged in, if not then get a new cooler or make sure the psu isn't faulty

I know definitely that the cpu fan is plugged in and in the right slot.

And how would I go about checking if the psu is faulty?

Try one stick of RAM in the slot nearest the CPU socket.

Make sure that all the power leads to the mobo are plugged in--this sounds like a lack of power to the mobo...you should unplug and replug to make sure they are firmly seated.

Apparently the PSU is turning on--load testing is dificult
