Sonata II compatible with Scythe Infinity?

Thread Starter
I'm looking to upgrade my cpu cooling and was looking at the Scythe Infinity. I've measured it up from the specs on the site with the space in my Sonata II and it looks like it should fit, but I was hoping someone else had tried / come across this combination before, and could offer some advice.

Cheers

It should work, but I might suggest you take out that air duck on the side it "might" touch the top of the scythe, or maybe not. My tt big typhoon is tall so i cant add a side fan or anything on the side. it would be the same for you, my case is exactly that size, if not smaller.

Hi g0pa,

Sorry I didn't see your thread and respond sooner.

I have a Scythe Infinity on an Asus P5N-E SLI in an Antec TX640B, which is almost exactly the same size and internal layout as your Sonata, and it is a REALLY tight fit. There's only 3/4 of an inch between the "top" (the side facing up when it's mounted in the case) of the cooler and the bottom of the power supply and it almost touches that horizontal brace.

One of the great strengths of the Infinity is the ability to get great cooling with very low noise by mounting two low speed fans on opposite sides of the cooler in a push-pull configuration. Unfortunately, in this case there's not room to do that.

If I had to do it over again (in this in computer case), I'd buy one of the better downdraft coolers instead. Although not as capable as the Infinity in a perfect setup, even in small cases like we have you can to duct cold air from outside the case directly to a downdraft cooler (not possible with the Infinity). I think this would give a good downdraft cooler the edge over the Infinity with a single fan in a TX640B or a Sonata and it would be cheaper too.

As of now, I'm looking for a good price on a bigger case with a bottom mounted power supply so I can mount two fans on my infinity in a bottom-to-top push-pull configuration. I'm sorry to say that I missed the Memorial day deal on the Antec P180B at CompUSA.

BTW, If you decide to go with the Infinity anyway, be sure to checkout this mod. It lowered my load temps and is much more secure.

Best of luck.

Hi Nevaziah & elwoodps, cheers for the replies.

I hear what you are saying regarding the distance between the heatsink and the psu, and was my main concern as the cpu socket on my motherboard is positioned quite close to the edge. I'm picking up a new motherboard second hand in a week or two which has another 1" or so so I was hoping this wouldn't be too much of a problem.

As far as 'top down' alternatives go, I have had a little look around and the scythe andy samurai looks pretty good (ideally whatever heatsink I go for will take a 120mm fan as I picked up some NF-S12's on the cheap and I like their combo of low noise / reasonable air flow). Any recommendations for other possible top downs?

That mod to boost the efficiency of the infinity looks really helpful! But at the risk having seasoned overclockers loling and rofling in my direction, or whatever reaction a newbie question warrants: what is lapping? Looks like just cleaning up the contact points to ensure optimum thermal transfer.. is that it, or is there more to it?

Hi g0pa,

Here's another nice freecableguy guide which will give you the basics of lapping.

How to Lap the Intel LGA775 IHS Flat

The various models of the Thermaltake Big Typhoon are probably the most highly regarded downdraft coolers in recent years. This very recent AnandTech review puts the latest incarnation (the Thermaltake Big Typhoon VX) on par with the Scythe Infinity dual-fan setup in the load test, which is pretty impressive. It doesn't do as well in the scaling test at higher overclocks as the big towers, but is still the leading downdraft cooler in the review.

One caveat however is that by most accounts the bottoms of the Big Typhoons are not very flat, so it will be more work to lap than something like a Scythe or a Thermalright cooler. Of course this also suggests the Big Typhoons will benefit more from lapping than other coolers that are a lot flatter right out of the box. This thought becomes really interesting when you note that AnandTech makes no mention of lapping anywhere in their review, so I assume none was done........

I'm sure you can get more and better advice on coolers if you post a question in the Cooling Sub-Forum, but I hope this was helpful.

Hi elwood, cheers for the reply, very helpful!

I spent a bit of time inside my case with a tape measure and have scratched the infinity from my shortlist. One big reason for this was I didn't know it could only be mounted in one direction on socket 939 mobos, which would mean the larger faces would be parallel with the psu, not the exhaust fan.

At the moment the only two coolers on the shortlist are the Big Typhoon VX and the Scythe Kama Cross. They both seem to perform well, would fit comfortably with my case / mobo, and are compatible with 120mm fans. Not sure which to go for out of the two though, the VX comes with a better fan, but would be replaced by a NF-S12 so isn't really a factor.

Oh yeah, cheers for the lapping info, I'll be giving it a try when I finally come to a decision regarding the cooler!

Well I've just ordered the Kama Cross and some AS5, can't wait till they get here so I can get lapping and see what the results are!
