Okay so my machine is idling at CPU 34 CORE1/2 27/27. Load of CPU 46 CORE1/2 36/36, with an ambient of 20C.

The CPU temp is according to speedfan/nvidia monitor and the core1/2 temp is according to TAT and Coretemp. So those are good numbers right?

I bring it up because I only have a Igloo 5700 cooler(of course I have strapped a Silverstone FM121 to it), but I was surprised I have such good temps with a so-so cooler. It made me doubt what I was seeing. My previous CPU was a Pentium D and that thing just ran HOT.

So with a load temp of 36ish I can probably overclock this thing pretty well then right?

Modki - I just realized your avatars eyes move.
You're bang on about the position of the CPU temp, except it's not called Tjunction, it's Tcase. Tjunction is the core temps.

Also Tjunction (core) should always be hotter than Tcase (CPU) because they're measured at the hottest points in the cores.

It's kinda like two campfires right next to each other. Is it going to be hotter directly between them? NO.... the hottest point is still going to be in the center of each campfire.

I don't know why your CPU temp reads higher than the core temp, I've always thought the core temp should be the hottest.

I too can be 100% wrong here, but I'm pretty sure on this one.

Ah yes, Tcase!
Now I really really confused.
My D is OK till 65C. Yet C2D is only good for 55C.
My D temp is read from TCase.
C2D is read from TJunction.

Thus, it seems either Tjunction should be cooler than Tcase (which is what his #'s say) OR C2D's can't take the heat as much as D's can (which is my assumption.)

I always see 27Cº from the 680i people. I just don't know what the hell those boards do with the temps.

Try to run a stress test with the temps showing. See if it goes up normally or doesn't move at all after 1 mins.

I did Orthos for a little bit, as well as 3dmark and some other tests. I didn't run them for long but my load temp went up to 36C, and after I stopped it, it quickly went back down to the 25/27 or 27/28.

I guess I am just surprised I am getting such low temps with just the Igloo 5700. I was all ready to order a Ultra Extreme or Tuniq Tower so I would be ready to really overclock this thing, but if I am only running 36C under load I could probably get some decent overclocking with just this budget cooler.

So run TAT and Coretemp and only pay attention to the Core0 and Core1 temps, don't worry about CPU temps.

You were confused about your so-so cooler and it giving you good temps?

Think about how confused I am. (and seriously doubting reliability of temps)

I am using a STOCK cooler and overclocking from 2.66GHz-> 3.33GHz and I have:

Idle:
TCase: 20C
TJunction: 27C

Load:
TCase: 32C
TJunction 38C

What the hell is going on? Not only am I using a stock cooler, but this computer is actually one I helped my girlfriend build and when we were putting the HSF on, she actually got some of the thermal paste that was pre-applied to the stock HSF on her fingers cause I forgot to tell her to be careful with it. I didn't even re-apply the paste!

We're planning on getting a Thermaltake V1 soon, but why is the stock fan doing so well? Or are my temps messed. I do have quite good airflow using modular cables (They're pretty much out of the way between intake and outake fans) but still!

I know...these Core 2 Duos are freaking amazing. I just booted up and my idle temps are 21/22 with Coretemp and 22/23 with TAT.

My freaking ambient is only 20C. But I do have the side case off and it is right near the air vent and 2-110CFM fans blowing right on or near the CPU I guess makes a difference

I just wonder if a Tuniq or GeminII would be able to give me the extra 2-3C to put this thing right at ambient
