E6700 help to an OC NEWB

Thread Starter
Hi everyone. I am not interested in huge overclocking here (see system). I have a few questions / issues, however. With current O/C played Oblivian at 16XFA and 4xAA for 3 hours no problems. I am still in the RMA time frame, so if I need to replace a componet please speak up now! I plan on keeping the e6700 and the MB, otherwise I will gladly trade-up. Also, if one of these questions is suitable for another forum I apologize in advance, but all goes together as you know.
Questions:
1 - My original thoughts when buying this board were to set the FSB at the rated frequency of 1333. I cannot get the system stable at anything beyond 1240. Also, at any setting above 1066, my bios warns "Warning! FSB at 267, not rated for your system, running at reduced rate...". CPUZ shows the 3.10 processor speed and vista has a 3.1 beside the 2.66, so assuming I am ok and can disregard this.
2 - It seems that the RAM might be the limiting factor here? I wanted the 4 gig sticks as I will be going to vista 64 bit within the next year, as soon as everyone else beta tests drivers and software compatibility for me (gheez! 64bit is worse than a MAC...at least on a MAC the hardware works) and I do HD video editing on the PC as well. Great buy for this 4 gig set.
3 - I now have audio noise coming from onboard...would a PCI audio card probably get rid of this for me?
4 - All right, I hear the 8800 GTX calling my name. Alternatively I could run 8800 GTS in SLI, but since I have the 640 MB card, a single GTX is actually cheaper. And since my PSU is at the bottom of my case, the second GTS in the lower PCI slot would give about 1/8" clearance between the second card case and 75% of the area of my PSU fan. Anybody got any thoughts? I've found head-to-heads where the GTX beats GTS SLI and vice-versa. All I can say is that for me the GTS is almost there, but not quite.

That's all - again, any help whatsoever is appreciated. I'm 37, with an infant, a full-time job, and I've already spent like 50 hours trying to get everything together and running like a champ here. Want to get on with some top-notch gaming! And I think (hope) my wife misses me.

here's the current status of your PC
FSB=310
multiplier=10
effectlive clock speed=3.1GHZ (hence the 3.1 near the 2.66(stock))
Bus speed:1240

FSB=bus speed/4

so if you can increase the bus speed to 1600, you will hit 400mhz fsb and 4Ghz.
EDIT: go up SLOWLY, by increment of about 50 on the bus speed.

What are your temperatures and voltage on the cpu? also, set the memory to "unlinked" so it wont affect the cpu overclock

4 ghz? Be happy with the 3.33 the 1333 gives me...not trying to get overly fancy here, and I know the 3.33 is well within the working range for the e6700, and matches the MB rating perfectly.
I have the CPU voltage set to 1.35, and the temp sneaks up to just under 50C at full load, idles in low 40's.
Regarding setting the memory to unlinked, the only way I can get a boot is to manually set my memory clock 750 or lower...any linking or fixed ratios result in hang.

exelent!! now we're in business.

Exelent! Everyone has limits of how far they wanna push their hardware. Thankfully, cpus nowadays have the Lock features if you overclock too high and they overheat, or hang.By the way, what are yhour tolerances for voltage, frequency and temperature?

By the way, at linked frequency, you also HAVE to select the ratio which will double pump the FSB by X2 for the ram.
I know on my board i cant just do LINKED and expect the frequency to go FSB*4 and the ram to go FSB*2. I ACTUALLY have to select the 1:1 ratio and watch the results.

Well, CPU voltage appears to influence CPU temperature, and I would like to stay within safe bounds with stock stuff (or at most a $50 aftermarket CPU cooler). The Antec 900 case keeps my system temp LOW...I have yet to go above 32C. I guess 50C give or take on the processor. I don't mind burning it out a little quicker - I bought a quad-core ready board planning to snag a marked-down 65nm quad-core when the 45nm processors hit. at the same time, don't wanna fry it. If 50C is too conservative or too aggressive let me know!
Yeah, if I choose linked I have to provide the ratio. But I have unlinked them and set it to 750 mhz, and relaxed my timings to something around 6-6-6-18 from 5-5-5-15 stock. Any linking resulted in hang, no matter the timings or voltage.
