Extra cooling for 8600GT?

Thread Starter
Greetings,

I'm just now assembling the system shown in my profile. I didn't think about GPU cooling before now.

If I'm going to try to push this GPU to the limit, and considering the rest of my system (which I'll be overclocking too), is there something I should get to enhance the GPU's cooling?

Also, any particular hints about overclocking this board would be welcomed.

TIA,

Blatwurst

PS: If you're interested in my project, a killer programming/gamer box for about $1K, see: http://www.overclock.net/intel-build...=1#post2259538

make sure you have plenty of airflow through the case, my case had a 12cm fan slot in the side which is better than my old clear uv case which only had a fan at the front and back.

ok i can help you here alot, first let me know if your ram will do 1700, then go get a VF-700 or VF-900, and then ill send you a tweaked 8600GT bios for the Superclocked card. It makes the shader core faster, and just does a preoverclock to everything else, but works great

Get a Zalman VF-900 for cooling and use ATiTools to raise the clock speeds. Do a couple mhz at a time and stop once artifacts start appearing, make sure you run some graphically intense programs for awhile too to make sure it can handle long play times!

Thanks to both of you. I'll get a VF-900.

ShellOfInsanity: Thanks for the offer to help. I don't know what "1700" means, but the RAM I got is supposed to be very overclockable, like to DDR2 1000 equivalent. When I get all my stuff, I'll get back in touch to talk about your special bios.

He means will your ram do 1700MHz (effective), 850MHz actual?

Here's an update on my sutu:

I've got a VF900 installed on my card. Keeps the temps down nicely. Early overclock results have me stable at 695/870 with no v mods. Stock is 540/700. Going much higher on either number causes artifacts.

I've found an article on upping my voltages. I'll be playing with that soon. I found a post from a guy with the same card as mine (eVGA) who says he's running at 865/1010 (shaders 1890) after v mods. I'd be very happy with those numbers

SHELLOFINSANITY: You listening? I tried PM'ing you, but your inbox is full (tells me that when I try to send). I'd like to take you up on your offer to send me a tweaked bios. You can email me at temp1 <at> parisgroup.net.

Thanks all for the great input!
