Ya, I've been rather disappointed with the 8600M benchmarks and tech specs. The new cards have less power than the older top of the line 7900 series cards.

I was hoping the lower cards would start at performance levels near the upper range of the older gpu's just like they did with the desktop stuff, but it's all hype. My current rig simply walks away from theirs using year old stuff. And if I was shopping around, I'd be hard pressed to decide whether to get the latest tech, or the older faster machines.

For comparison:
I'm running:
T7400 (2.16GHz) versus their T7500 (2.2 GHz)
7950 GTX versus their 8600M
@ the 1280x1024 3dMark06:
I get 5260 at stock timings. They did 3630; even their overclock couldn't come close.

I did the SuperPi 2M for comparison as well (@my oc'd 2.55GHz with apps running in the background).. I got 51.797. The cpu at least on the new stuff looks like it's running slightly faster considering my overclock; so maybe that faster new fsb speed is helping.

These new gpu's seem to have almost just swapped a 8 instead of the 7.. 8600M GT = refined GeForce Go 7600 GT with DX10 capabilities. They aren't ground breaking performance gpu's.

Basically folks should be aware that the new santa rosa platforms and gpu's aren't exactly any faster than the older tech stuff. They're just a bit more refined.. little steps forward I guess.
