An account of my research

Ive been doing alot of research on the G84/86 chips to see why with the numbers so stacked agaisnt them spec wise they preform so well. Lets start off with the first thing i noticed, 8 rops, not 12 not 16, but 8. Rops pretty much blend all the work together that goes on inside a GPU, so how can 8 handle this load so well? It would seem nvidia did something we didnt know about, well I didn't while there are 8 rops they can output 4 operations per clock, so in truth compared to the last gen rop count its not so bad, its like having 32rops instead of just 8, which makes since, that means there is enough power behind the rops to cover every shader or so it seems, more on that later though.

So we know we have the ability to do 32rops per calculation thats not bad at all, but what about the TMU or the texture mapping units, these affect fillrate, aka how many gigatexels per second, for both single and multi textureing, well it has 12 TMU's same as the 7600GT had except oh wait nvidia did it agian, these 12TMU's actully output 2 textures per calculation when multitexting is used, and how many times do you actully use a single texture for an entire game? Well that means in multi texturing we have 24 TMU's thats not so bad, its starting to make sense now.

But here is another one to chew your head around, the cards it competes with have 36 pixle shaders + 7 vertex shaders, so that would seem like hey wait they have more power, they would except a traditional GPU is never at 100% load in this area, it would have to slow down for vertex calcualations if it need 8 vs but just 4 PS at that time it would have to wait. A stream processor design does not, that means i could do both at the same time, all 8 Vertex shader calculations, its not limited by the fact that there is 7. IT means one is alot more efficient for its needs, interesting still, then take this though 32 steam procossors on the G84 but they run at 1.12ghz on the 8600GT and 1.35ghz on the 8600GTS, so wait a minute, the other shaders run around 600 mhz on both the Nvidia and ATI cards, that means one is working faster than the others, and add it that nvidia does it agian with this, those 32 shaders do 2 calcuations per clock, that means wait its a 32x2 design that means its acts like a 64x1 thanks to the efficeny of stream processors, I hope this helps anyone else that wanted to know any of this.
