Opty 165 vs. 170 vs. 175

With Opty's getting so low in price, all three of these are affordable (at least to me). But which one has the highest clock potential? Not necessarily the most improvement, but the highest peak clock.

My theory is that, if a person is willing to pay for it, a higher multiplier will give you a better chance at the highest clock speed. Is this true?

If you've got the cooling, the higher multipliers can shine. If your board has decent but not great voltage options, and you have good aircooling, you're better off going with a lower multiplier and run that FSB up.

I have very rarely seen someone buy themselves an Opty 170. Anyone who has an Opteron gets a 165.

If your motherboard can go high, just get a 165. If not, get something higher like a 170 or 175. They're all the same basically except for the stock clocks because of the higher multi.

If your mobo can handle the higher FSB, most AMD CPUs have the same limit on their OC.

So go for the cheapest one, assuming you motherboard can handle it.

That is where I'm going with this!

My 144 CACJE won't go any higher than 280. That stepping should do much more, so I'm thinking my mobo is the limiting factor. Thus, a higher multi Opty would get me closer to 3.0GHz...

I'd get a 175 then. That'll get you to 3080 hopefully, but if cooling could be a factor a 170 at 2800 wouldn't be bad either.

Cool. I agree. And now I know that I'm not crazy... unless you're crazy too

Anyway, thanks for your input, thanks for everyone's input!
