Undetelable files on external hard drive

Thread Starter
I own a Western Digital 500GB MyBook and lately, I cannot delete any files on it. If I drag a new word document and try to delete it immediately, it would say, "Cannot delete "word doc. name": Cannot find the specified path. Make sure you specify the correct path."

Dragging the files to the bin does not work. Using the DEL key causes the same error. The bad thing is that it's still on it's default factory FAT32 format.

Possibly.

Can you copy your files to an internal drive (if you have enough space), and then just reformat the whole thing?

I have 400GB of files. I'll try to rar them into pieces and save them variously somewhere.

Other solutions are still welcomed because it'll be hard for me to find some space.

EDIT: What programs can detect Bad Boot Sectors?

Ftw, I'm able to delete some files. @_@

I called WD Technical Support and they recommend reformatting to NTFS. AHHHHH, where do I find space!

So, if I can delete some files (like 3% of my files are deletable) and some files are undeletable, what's going on?

If you cant find enough space you can always use an online storage solution. A free one, although limited is:

http://www.dropboks.com/

or some that you can sign up for and get the first gigs for free like

https://www.mediamax.com/home/signup...FRK1YgodCBu_aA (first 25 gigs free)

Since its just temporary you could just use a bunch of them while you format the drive.

yeah buddy, i dunno why some hard drives are still being shipped as FAT32, but i read somewhere that FAT32 is only supposed to be used for drives under like 20GB.. so anything above that wont work for long, FAT32 for small drives (USB sticks) and NTFS for bigger drives (hard drives)

I'm currently raring my files into pieces and sending them to all over the place. After that, I'll reformat it into NTFS and give you guys an update.

I used the "Quick Format" option and that's enough to fix my problem.

I am now on NTFS. Now to get my files back. I had to give up a lot of files though.

While I never actually read this somewhere, I think that most external drives utilize FAT32 because it doesn't support any type of journaling or file permissions... when a customer buys your external hard drive, puts stuff on it and then brings it to a friend's house, goes to do a drag and drop and gets "Access Denied," they'll assume you've made a faulty product... FAT32 simply doesn't care who owns the files

Now I'm not entirely sure if setting file/folder owners to "Everyone" works right, or even if that would be readable by a different computer... FAT32 sucks, but for portability, NTFS can be much, much worse.

To the OP: If you need to recover your data, I've had some good results with Runtime's GetDataBack. There's one for FAT, you can read about it at their website. Of course, how you go about acquiring it is up to you.
