I don't buy on `cool as hell` I buy on `will it give me what I want the most officiant, performance and dollar wise?`

Hey it's the father in me. I'm older than most here and lately, due to volume of threads I cannot seem to relate on any level, I think I'm about ready to quit OCN. It's a young kids oasis and I just feel left out and old. Nothing against anyone here but again everything against everyone here
Nice point man, I agree wholeheartedly. Old people still have a place man. Where would I be without my father? One of the most important people in my lives.

Well...you're going to have to justify it yourself, obviously...if you want to eat Top Ramen for 3 months because you got a sweet phone, go right ahead...

Unless you really really want it, it's probably just a waste of money. Want a nice phone? Get one free off newegg with a 2-year plan....AT&T but free nonetheless

that free phone won't have 1/100th what the iPhone has... sure... I can make phone calls with it... and what else?

it's 2007... I use my phone to:
make calls... and conference calls (up to 6 people, which is why i'm not using at&t)
manage my schedule and tasks
taking down notes and voice memos
checking my voicemail
checking my e-mail
VPNing, VNCing, and otherwise accessing the services and systems I *need* to
listening to music
listening to talks / keynotes / confrences / educational / etc
keep track of important info that I need access to at all times
taking the occasional picture / recording the occasional movie -- both of which I do rarely due to the low quality of the results...
as a speakerphone
with a wireless headset
for voice activated commands
as a tv/dvd/dvr/receiver remote
as a wireless network diagnostic device
as a e-book reader... etc etc etc

I don't want to keep track of, carry, or buy the cheapest it-will-do solutions.

I don't want to carry a laptop, cell phone, mp3 player, scientific calculator, camera, etc etc etc... when I can have ONE single, lightweight, small device that can provide the services of 5+ pieces of gear all while fitting in my shirt pocket.

hell. the phone i'm using right now (as in typing this post on) was 400 plus 2 yr contract... and i've spent another small fortune on too-easily-broken mini SD cards... and another 140 on BT and replacement BT headsets...

i'll be one of the first people in line for the iPhone as soon as my existing contract is up, they unlock the phone to other providers, or I find out I can use it with my plan...

the people that freak out over the price either have never owned a compariable device, don't realise the actual power/amount of hardware in the iPhone, are apple haters, or are not part of the target market.

I will use the iPhone.
It is worth the money for the features.
It will help me to carry more tools, while at the same time being smaller and more powerful then what I use now.

This is how I justify purchasing one.

On a separate notion: Isn't this the same thing we do when building a PC? Get more because it either looks cool or gets you there faster?
I said the exact same thing to myself - but its like buying another 8800 GTX and thats no good for my bank account.

ehh not for me cause I drop my phone way too often and It would hurt too much to do it to a $600 phone.

The RAZR was 600 when it first came out, and that was with a contract agreement.

Just be patient.. and save a couple hundred dollars.. Makes sense doesn't it?

Yes for you it's justified because you liked the `big` toys. I have a no name mp3 player that does me just fine and wasn't 300$. I also have cell phone that was free with signup. Guess what. They both do what yours does but much cheaper. Yes it's cool and please don't tell me that has no bearing on your decision as I'm sure it's a good % of your self justification here. Hell just having to post this to justify your purchase tells me your doubting it.

They both have 4 wheels, get you from point A to point B, it's just how flashy you wanna look getting there. For some they must but for me I could care less.
Its the fun you have using it. For instance, I have a cheap car and its not very fun to use - its slow and doesn't cancel out outside sound well. If you have the money to do something then do it, you only have one life.
