Is it worth upgrading my video card at this point in my rigs career?

Thread Starter
Well back a few months I didnt upgrade my card because of my CPU. Now I've got a new CPU and its ripping away and I'm thinking about stepping up my video card to a 8800GTS, or possibly a GTX. I figure I could keep my 7800GTX also on the side, and later down the road when I build a new righ move my 7800GTX back to this rig and the 8800 onto my next rig.

Any thoughts, comments, or if you wanna talk me outta spending my money, is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Right now, don't upgrade anything, to much stuff is coming and soon the GeForce 9800's are supposed to be coming out. (I wouldn't expect it for another year. Juts what I heard.)

your call really.
Just remember that anything that is the Latest & Greatest & Most Expensive,
Most Powerfull & leading edge today,
will be considered "entry level" by this time next
year and "obsolete" ,left behind in the dust in 18 months anyways.
But hey,,it's your nickel.

The flip side is,,i'll hold off untill the next new thing arrives,,
if you play this right,,you will Never upgrade,,

Get the 8800gts 320. It'll be a nice upgrade with out costing too much. It'll get you buy 'till major dx10 games come out and also cards that can handel them better.

This is what i was thinking. Not going to crazy even. But what I'm wondering is am I going to really see the benefits of the new video card in my pc or is my pc going to hold it back alot?

If it seems worthy, I'd blow 300$ to get the cheapest 8800gts I can.

What do you get in 05 and 06 with that rig? Give us some numbers so we can see if it will a lot from a 8800

a 7800 gtx is a decent card. I'd wait until I needed a better card for software I wanted to play.

In other words wait it out until you need to upgrade. If you wait even 6 months newer cards will be out so you can get better/cheaper then you could now

Yes and the fact that DX10 cards are still not proven. After the performance i have seen in DX10 apps the past few days i would be suprised if the 8800GTX could handle a simple DX10 game

Hold off a bit, your card is fine for now.

Wait and see wat happens with DX10, it's early days yet.

I reckon you should keep your 7800GTX until at least directx 10 games come out. Don't upgrade for the hell of it because your new tech will be the latest thing one minute and old news the next.
