worth setting up raid 1 ?

I have 3 seagate 500gb hard drives and I am thinking of making a raid with two of them, is it worth it to waste a full drive of space ?

If you never have hard drive problems, you may think it was a waste. But if you have a hard drive crash, you will thank the overclocking gods you set up raid 1.

It all depends on how important the space vs data is to you.

I have had two hard drives die one was a 400gb seagate and a 80gb 2.5 drive, I just purchased the 3rd 500gb seagate for cheap so I dunno I think it would be worth it for all my data I really do not want to loose but then again how often do hard drives die ?

RAID0 will be a better option. Unless you are paranoid, tend to have disk failure problems, or have extremely important information to backup.

haha not paranoid it was just a thought, I have my raptors in a raid 0, I am paranoid about putting my 500gb hard drives in a raid 0 not worth losing 1TB of data

go with raid mirroring, or get a backup solution that works...

in this machine i have a 4 drive stripe... and 2 external eSATA drives that i use to backup the stripe...

i also burn DVDs like fish drink water... i've lost enough data to know, nothing is 100% reliable... and it's easier to have 2 copies, then to deal with the loss...

I use a Raid1+0 and I just had one of my 4 seagates die. Man I was happy that I JUST changed it over from a four drive raid 0. I have hundreds of movies on it and that woulda be horrible.

External Hard Drives can be used instead of RAID1 to save wasted space.

Either that or a RAID1+0..

Hard drives are cheap. RAID 1 is well worth it if you have ANY concerns about a hard drive crash and do not have to be bothered with backing up data elsewhere.

Most people here though, want the performance boost of RAID 0, and on-board RAID sucks with anything other then simple RAID 0 or RAID 1. A lot of the people w/ RAID 0 setups are using the computer primarily for gaming anyway. Not really a big deal if you lose your game files.

If you have really sensitive data and are constantly hitting the drives - then yes a RAID 1 is useful. If you are setting this up for a fileserver, do not use Raid 0 as they are more prone to corruption - and if once fails they all fail.
