There is the first guide to lapping I could come across. It refers to the ihs of the cpu, but is exactly the same proccess for the heatsink. As far as a fan, Ive got a vantec tornado 92mm @ 110cfm, loud but works great. Zip ties are your friends for mounting it.

I don't think he needs to LAP or get a new fan...
Something is clearly wrong.

Did you perchance set to 2.xx vcore instead of 1.xx vcore?
I was suprised to see those options (2v+) on the AMD boards I have worked on.
Scary voltage for a chip!

Well my ac freezer stock out of the box performed no better than stock cooling. After a better fan I saw a good drop in temps. Then I decided to lap it and it was so concave it was unreal. They have a real bad factory finnish on them. But for $5 worth of sandpaper and a couple hours of my time what a difference.

Also if he reset it with the same paste on there, now theres more air bubbles. So if it was incorrectly sat before, the reseat without cleaning the old paste off and reapplying isnt going to help anything at all.

Maybe the 64Pro is junk compared to the 7 Pro (Intel) but mine gave me 27C idle temps @ stock, 38C load. With 70C Ambient. Then I got nearly 1Ghz OC, 1.4v vcore and am @ 37 Idle 49 Load w/ 75C ambient.

All my temps I listed above are with AS Ceramique (not as good as AS5) and are horrid botch jobs... ie I removed the HS from the chip about 4 times without reapplying...

Thread Starter
I am quite sure my vcore is around 1.4V (I can see in BIOS, Everest and cpu-z etc). For lapping, I think it is quite difficult to me and it is a long process to go... and does it mean to lap the copper base of the heatsink?

For the thermal paste, "vwgti" is correct, I am actually worried that the pre-applied MX-1 is giving worse performace than before as I just reseat it with the same paste. I have no extra MX-1 with me so I just try to use a card to redistribute the pre-applied MX-1 before reseating it...

>_<

Its not junk it just needs some work, thats all. I guess its the pick of the batch you get. Some arrive excellent performers, some you need to finess to get to work right.

When I lapped mine it took me a good four to five hours to get it completely flat, I got a rotten apple out of the bunch. But now it performs great with my current oc of 2.85 @ 1.5 vcore, and idles 30c and loads 38c, with a 90f ambient.

Edit I also switched off to as5, as the pre applied paste imo is way too much. A small dot of as5 in the center works great for me. Im sure the mx1 would be better assuming they applied less to the base. But I had as5 kicking around and no mx1 to compare against it with less applied.

i was using the freezer 64 pro on my 3500 winchester for about year..it came with tons of mx1 on the bottom..when i put it on it all came gushing over the sides of the cpu hehe..also my temps were high..i later used some arctic 5 with it and it was a very good heatsink,i cant remeber the temps but it was about 30 idle maybe on a stock 2.2 3500....anyway im hesistant to use it on my new opteron 185..although the fan sucks on the stock opty 185 sink, the sink itself is ok with 4 copper pipes..reason im hesitant to use the freeaer 64 pro is it had about the crappiest finish on the bottom i have ever seen..some reviews say it came to them mirrored ..but i can run my fingernair down the plate and my fingernails get caught in the grooves,,it is as if it was machined like this on purpose..anyway im gona do a lap on the freezer before i use it on my opty..

I'm beginning to agree with vwgti, maybe Arctic Cooling has some quality control issues. A pity, since when they get it right their stuff is great. My Freezer 64 has been performing very well since day 1, idle temps are about 4° above my room temperature and load has never been over 45C. Lapping has brought load temp down to 43C. Still using the stock fan and re-applied MX-1.

You probably didn't mount it properly. When I used to have one, it wasn't mounted properly and I got 60C load, 45C idle, then I remounted it, put some new thermal paste on, and made sure the lock was tight and I got 22C idle, 30C load at 2.6Ghz 1.45v.

Yeah, maybe it's not seated right. Give this thread a look:
