P5b Deluxe (How to boot to cd?) - Page 2

You could try one of these -- it might just be worth it to get a SATA drive though. IDE is the sucks.

Could be worth a try I will give it a go as soon as I get home from work. Its very weird though, any other board ive ever installed just boots to the cd rom when you change the priority. I know its not the board as this is my second!

I have a few of these boards and I boot to a IDE CDRom just fine. I will check the setting and report back this evening. But I know for a fact it can and should boot to an IDE CDRom.

if its not showing up in bios at all make sure you have power to it and the jumper is set correctly and try a different ide cable

You go into the BOOT TAB, and after you set it to boot from dvd first you go down to where it says cd drive and you select it as first.

If you don't have a cd in the drive or don't press space when it tells yu it auto loads the next boot drive

Your mothrboard should have a manual, and in the manual 4-30 it shows:

Far2gud,

Here is what I did to make it work. I first took one of my systems that currently did not have a CDRom because it was a folding rig.

1. I rebooted, hit DEL to get into the bios.

2. Went to the ADVANCED SCREEN (Second one from the left on the top of the screen)

3. Selected Onboard Devices Configuration

4. In the Onboard Devices Configuration screen I selected [Enabled] for the JMicron SATA/PATA Controler and selected [IDE] for the Controller Mode.

5. Important part.... Save your setting, and reboot. If the JMicron controller was not enabled the first boot, the CDRom will not show up in the bios yet.

6. After reboot, hit DEL again to get into the Bios

7. Select the BOOT screen from the top menu (4th one over from the left)

8. Select Boot Device Priority

9. Under the 1st or 2nd (depending of if you have a floppy or not) Select your CDRom. Although there is an option for ATAPI CD-ROM, mine also lists IDE: COMBO-52X16C(This is my actual cdrom, yours may be different). If I select ATAPI CD-ROM, my system will not boot to the CD, but if I select the actual device, the IDE: COMBO-52X16C, it does just fine.

10. Save setting and reboot.

Hope this works for you.

Thats exactly what I thought should happen, the jmicron controller is enabled but the boot priority only lists the atapi cd rom and not my specific one. (even after bios save)

I have a third cd-rom I will try, I am starting to beleive that this board might be picky as to what drives it will pick up on that controller.

Thanks Again for your help

someone already mentioned this, but are you sure the jumper is in the right position? im pretty sure that i just plugged mine in, then set it in boot priority. i would think IDE devices should be recognized regardless of the SATA setup. but i have been wrong before.

Ive tried master, slave and cable select, I will go through everything once again when I get home but will probably buy a sata drive in the end.

I have a feeling this rig will be obsolete before I get to use it!!

Took a week away from this and had a fresh look last night. Started getting intermitent no video when restarting the machine so I removed one of my memory sticks and guess what...it booted perfect and picked up the cd-rom drive...yay!

But unfortunately I have a new problem. Everytime I enable raid the jmicron controller ignores the cd-rom again. I read somewhere that you can't enable raid on this board and boot to a pata cd-rom. Any truth in this?
