First one of its kind Power speakers directly with the Silverstone EB03
Silverstone demonstrated a prototype USB audio amplifier, the EB03, at Computex 2007. The Silverstone EB03 pops into an internal expansion slot and draws power from a four-pin floppy power connector. The audio device interfaces with the system via USB, connecting to an internal USB header.
The Silverstone EB03 takes advantage of an ESMT Class-D digital audio amplifier with USB interface to power speakers. PC audio is piped to connected speakers directly in digital form with digital amplification technology, negating the use of digital-to-analog convertors. Users can connect any unpowered bookshelf and floor standing speakers to the Silverstone EB03 without a separate receiver or audio amplifier.
Silverstone claims the EB03 can output 35-watts of power per channel with a signal-to-noise ratio in excess of 105dB. Silverstone did not reveal the total harmonic distortion levels, however.
The Silverstone EB03 features two RCA audio output connectors instead of speaker terminals. Silverstone is undecided on whether to include RCA-to-stripped end cables for speaker terminal connectivity with the final shipping product.
The Silverstone EB03 is still in development, but the price can be as low as $50 when the product ships, Silverstone representative Tony Ou said.
