Removed IHS, drastic temperaure decrease!

Thread Starter
I just removed my Opteron 165 IHS and now core 1 is about 10 degrees cooler under load while core 0 remains the same.

with IHS (under load-Prime 95) room temp ~80F
core 0: 60C
core 1: 75C

With IHS removed under load-Prime 95(room temp now 84F)
core 0: 52C
core 1: 47C

that's odd how now core 1 is cooler when it was hotter before. These cores are tricky. To keep at the same temperature. I

I still think the CPU socket is higher than the core and the HS not making perfect contact with the core.. After removing my IHS at first the temp was 160C but the comp shut down! Then I faced the HS the other way and now the computer boots fine. If it was 130C I don't think I would be posting this right now.

Cores temps are usually different. Load is not exactly equal and manufactor process does not ensure every chip is the same.

The bios reports the cpu is 11C. that's 50F, colder than the room temperature.

I have been having problems getting an acurate reading from the bios. Before I removed my IHS the bios read 50C idle now it's reading 11C.

What kind of cooling do you have on the cpu ? 11c sounds awfully low unless you are running a peltier...otherwise , i would say your temp readings might be off..

I am using Zalman CNPS700B-Cu on air,

After about 5 tries it seems I have finally gotten the AS5 just right and now under Prime 95 both cores stay at about 45C max. This is the first time ever the cores have been the same temperature while stress testing and at that low of a temp. Now I am pleased. thanks for all the input and advice. I guess the correct placement of the AS5 is more critical than I thought.
