A good language to start with? - Page 3

VB.net definatly, it's a beginner language that will let you easily work into C++ and alot of different programming languages, pick up a copy of M$ Visual Studio, it's wonderful

To be honest, I think to start off, with no knowledge of coding, you need to slowly build up. Start with HTML than moved to XHTML to get a little better experience into the next part, PHP. If you ever want to code for a web site for a corporation or a forum like OCN than you need to known PHP scripting. After all of those languages than you move to CSS, which is basically a coded style sheet you slip into HTML. After you get those basic web ones down you can movie to the programming languages. C++, Pearl, VisualBasic, and so on. If you want to be ubher l33t you can learn machine language as well. 1010111001110101110101100=FTW!

I had to do that for a high school class. Not fun, and not useful, LOL but it is fun to tell people "I can code in essentially binary"

Anyway, Qbasic, Vbasic, Basic are all great starter languages. (you basically type in english what you want it to do and it does it!). After that, Java, C, C+, HTML are all in there together. Just play around with them. If you're trying to learn for fun, i'd suggest starting with Qbasic and then moving on to java, C, Html. If you're trying to learn to sell your services, skip straight to html then C. People are more likely to need html than anything else.

While Java/other OO languages are a must, C is a better first language
I agree that it is essential to understand C - but syntax can be a barrier. Once you have become proficient in a cleaner language it is alot easier to backtrack and really grasp some of the underlying concepts.

As far as a tutorial site/book - pretty much anything will do. I haven't seen a tutorial or book that WASN'T helpful in some way, and any of them will be helpful to start off. So I don't have a specific recommendation, but look at Amazon.com and find something that's gotten good reviews. You can't go wrong there.

Btw, VB.Net is part of the .NET suite, so you'll have to find a way to get ahold of that. I'm not sure if they sell VB.NET separately or not.

@Sideburns - QB was the first language I ever learned... I learned it by editing stuff in the Gorrilas and Nibbles games. It's also a good start, but maybe not for this day and age.

i would also say .net, thats what i started on.
i believe it is a great starting point.

I started with HTML and then learned the basics of C++. I recommend you learn HTML completely along with CSS so you are able to code a site from scratch. Then learn PHP and learn to interact with MySQL databases using PHP. After than learn Java and C++.
