130C, is it even possible? Faulty motherboard monitor?

After I removed my IHS and booted the computer again, the bios reported that the CPU was 130C and then the computer kept shutting off until I was quick enough to enter the BIOS and read the temp first...then I reseated the HSF and now the temps are fine but their reported too low.

I have the bios set to shut off the computer when the CPu reaches 76C (the lowest possible) or so I thought, but when I went into the BIOS after the incident this option was disabled!

Well, I'm still using the Opteron and it passed prime for about 30 minutes now so I guess either this processor can withstand near blowtorch temperatures or the BIOS is wrong.

Now I had a problem where the BIOS THOUGHT the CPU was hotter than it really was and the computer kept shutting off. I don't know what's going on. Did that 130C damage the temperature monitor?

I can't figure out how Core Temp can read the temperature fine but in the BIOS its all screwed up.

Wow, having a temp much higher than required to boil water (100C) is insane. I personally don't think the BIOS would even run at 130C, and must have been a faulty reading due to removing the IHS... since it wasn't designed for this to be removed in the first place.

I know I got my Athlon XP 2500+ up to 90C in the BIOS one time due to an improperly seated Heatsink, but 130C is just ridiculous!

BTW, My Athlon still runs stable at 2.2GHz, like a champ!

But back to your situation: Why would you even bother to remove the IHS in the first place?? I wouldn't fiddle with that... not designed for it. But hey, it's your loss if you destroy it. Just my 2 cents.

130C? Try touching it... . Probably faulty, my bios and core temp readins are always 10C off .

Why? Because
1. It lowed my temps over 10 degrees
2. It lowered my temps over ten degrees.

Why do people overclock? "If it's not designed for it".

I understand that chips "aren't designed for it" (overclocking), in a matter of speaking, but it's just my opinion that removing the IHS is a rare and dangerous practice that isn't done by many overclockers. If you want to do it, fine. If it helps your temps, great. I stand by what I said, including that it's just my 2 cents. I'm just looking out for a fellow overclocker, I wasn't trying to lecture you.

130C?????? Did you see steam coming off the processor? Water boils at 100C.... That sounds way too high, especially if the chip was fine afterwards. Either that or AMD is way too conservative about keeping the chip below 55C. If chips can hit 130C without problems, we all have a LOT of OCing headroom left!!!!!!

you probably should have considered just buying a new heatsink if you were that worried about temps. And choggs is right IHS removal is reserved for the most experienced overclockers, I wouldn't even touch that, and I have a Associates in PC Maint Tech. Just be careful dude

I lapped CPU/HSF and put AS5 on...

Temps are actually higher... until AS5 cures.
