$500ish Upgrade

Thread Starter
I think in a couple of weeks I might be able to makes the upgrades shown below to my computer, and was wondering what everybody thinks of the stuff in the sig and the detailed page. I'm trying to keep some of the upgrades cheap, while still leaving room for upgrade ability. Here are the one's I've chosen:

Gigabyte GA-G33M-DS2R I chose the GA-G33M-DS2R because for one, it'll fit in my case, and also it's fairly cheap for its overclocking performance, which is quite good apparently for an mATX board.

Sapphire Radeon 7000 I'm going to use the Sapphire Radeon 7000, I think, until the HD 2600XT comes out, and I'll see how that performs; since it's got two video outputs, I'll be able to shove pixels to both the current LCD I've got and the old CRT I'm going to dig out of my garage.

2GB Crucial Tracer DDR2 800 I'm choosing this RAM because for its performance (and the awesome LED's), so when I upgrade to a processor I would actually want to overclock, I'll have some good RAM to do it on. Plus, it's fairly cheap for the value.

Logitech MX Revolution I chose the Logitech MX Revolution, because I've been having very serious issues during any type of movement with it, so I'm going to get one of the best mice I can find, and this is the one.

Add in the software (Windows Vista Home Premium, Microsoft Office Home and Student 2007), and it comes out to about $500. If anyone has any other ideas for better stuff that won't break the bank (and I really mean it; I don't want this upgrade, other than the video card, to go above $500), I'd really appreciate it.

That won't happen for another couple of months. I've got to get the money for it before it'll happen.

How much is that RAM? If it's around $110, these would be the best pick. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231065

I'd try to save up and get a C2D. Save another $500 and build a whole new system. You may need to upgrade your current PSU as well. :x

After a rebate the RAM is around $110, but I'll take a look at those, too. Have a rep.

Again, I really want to save up and get a Core 2 Duo, but right now that is not entirely an option. Maybe in about two months, but not right now. I'm more concerned with upgrade ability right now than pure performance.

You're planning to spend about $390 on hardware alone (based on Newegg prices). Now, I assume you plan to do more upgrades down the road.

One recommendation I do have is to move away from the mATX format. That means, get a new case and PSU right now. You'll need a new PSU anyways once you upgrade video, and ATX just offers you more.
Total: $389.94

This is a balanced upgrade, moving away from mATX format, with a nice case and decent PSU. I cut down a little on your mouse and the RAM, and the DS3 is a very nice overclockable board.

What Chozart recommended is good. The DS3 boards are excellent. If you get it, you'll be another step closer to a C2D.

Chozart, that is brilliance right there. I am going to update this stuff right now, and if I could, I'd give you a hug.

The only problem I have with it though is the mouse. I have tried both the G5 and the MX Revolution, and in all honesty, the MX Revolution feels better to me. Plus, it's wireless, and I don't entirely like wires too much. Eh, I'll see what I feel like doing in a couple of weeks when I actually upgrade.

Also, I found this "Cooler Master Centurion 5" for the same price at Newegg, and it seems more attractive to me. Does anybody know how well the cooling in this case is, and if wire management is good?

Obviously, the mouse is your choice...

The Centurion 5 is a very nice case also. Sladesurfer had one, and he did a master job with cable management in it Cooling is also pretty good also. It's a no-nonense case but good quality. Did you see there is also one with a side window?

Edit: can't find sladesurfer's stuff right away

Ooh, I'm liking the one with the side window. I've got another question, though. Would the "DFI Infinity P965-S" be worth the extra $30? It's got RAID and Crossfire support should I want to use it.
