CPU is running hotter.

post #1 of 12
Thread Starter
Hi guys. I'm at Special K's house and we just put on some thermal paste for my processor. For some reason it's running hotter than it was before, and I know that S.K. knows what he's doing. But neither him, me or the two other people here knows why it's getting hotter and I was wondering if I could have some help as to why it is this hot. It was about 30 degrees idle, and 40 degrees when doing heavy gaming or something. Now it's about 35 degrees idle and at full load it's getting up to 55 degrees.

I'm not that fluent in computers so if you need more info just let me know.

Need to allow for the thermal paste to cure, therefore giving lower temperatures.

This takes around 2 -3 days.

Also is the ambient temp diff from where you normally boot up your PC and where it is now?

The heatsink must not be installed properly - ie pressing hard against the CPU. Try redoing it and making sure.

Allowing the thermal paste to cure wouldn't bring the load temps down from 55C to 40C in my opinion.

Try re-seating the HSF but this time try using a little bit less thermal paste, see if that does the trick.

check to make sure the board isnt warped near the zif sockett. Mine was and caused an air pockett between my heatsink and processor. Gotta a new board and temps dropped over 20c. Crazy huh? Also check to insure you didnt use to much thermal grease. It sould be spread thin. If having trouble with the amount then use Zalman Super Thermal Grease. Do you have a fan exhausting out the back. How many fans are in your rig. Are you using a fan based memory cooler like XTC or the Dominator?

Special K put the thermal paste on and I know he did it right (he does it all the time for other people). I have 2 80mm fans blowing in and 1 120mm fan blowing out. We tried pressing the heatsink on the cpu harder, but still getting high readings. I'll wait for a couple days to see if the temp drops.

Sorry for still bothering about this, but I just did a test. I used 3 different temperature readers when using orthos and I got this.

Sensors View = 32 degrees
Everest = 31 degrees
Speed Fan = 55 degrees

My voltages are reading the same in Sensors View and Speed Fan, just the temperatures are different. My bios is also reading about the same as Speed fan. Does anyone have any idea why speed fan is reading differently than everest and sensors view?

31c is about 88f...anyway, speedfan is reading the core temperature, which is hotter.
