Which is the right motherboard for me

Thread Starter
I want to do this:

I want to have at least 2 GB of DDR2 RAM. I want to fit on an 8800, an e6600 and have decent overclocking features. I also want something reliable and with plenty of room for expansion. I have two optical drives and two hard drives that are currently hooked up through IDE but can go Sata if I have the cable.

Also, while I am at it, I need a decent power supply to power all that. I will not be going SLI so I do not need any crazy 1KW PCP&C PS. Just something reliable.

Where should I go with the motherboard and power supply? Just wondering what my options are

You have four IDE devices, which effectively rules out the P965 chipset boards (except one). The P965 chipset does NOT support PATA, and most boards with that chipset only have one IDE connector, controlled by a secondary controller.

The one exception is this ABIT board, which looks nice. However, I haven't heard a whole lot about it, and have no experience with it:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813127018

Alternatively, there are the nVidia 650i boards. Here are a couple:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813128044

They're more expensive though. And yes, SLI... but they just showed up because of their support for four IDE devices

I would do some research on the ABIT, since it does look nice to me, and ABIT generally does offer overclock options in the BIOS. It seems like a good inexpensive board to me.

The powersupply isn't something you should cut corners on. Here is a bunch of Silverstones I'd recommend:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817256021

The cheapest of those, the Element, is actually pretty good. 500W and 35A on the 12V rails is enough to power any rig with a single 8800 card. The other ones are excellent... the 560W Zeus is one of the top PSUs on the market (tier 1 on Jonnyguru.com), while the OP650/DA650 are also very nice.

Another PSU that I recommend is the Corsair 520W unit:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817139001
Solid, powerful, modular, and very very good quality.

Finally, if you're really on a budget, look at some of the XCLIO offerings. No-nonsense, and not as good as the above-mentioned PSUs, but still good stuff that doesn't cost too much:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817189014

PS: I took a look at IDE to SATA converters... those things aren't really cheap:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16812206002

That's like $17 shipped. Since an 80GB SATA Drive costs just over $47... might want to think about a new drive instead (an 160GB drive with 16MB cache costs $60 + shipping)

Your board only has one IDE connector.

Well, let me see what I have...

My optical drives (which I only use one of anyway, so I can sell the second one) and an LG LightScribe.. let me see if it can connect through Sata...nope, that's IDE only...

If I have to, I will only use two hard drives. I can just transfer everything to one hard drive and the new one can be SATA...

So, to revise: I need something that fits all the other info, plus has two IDE's and at least one SATA connection.

That should be a LOT easier.

Any nice motherboard will do.

The Gigabyte DS3 is a nice board for you. Overclocks nicely, and it's only $99 right now on Newegg.

Didn't really ask you for a budget yet.... how much you're willing/able to spend on the mobo + PSU combined?

Mostly just more bang for my buck. Kind of trying to keep it under 250.

The P5N-E looks really good. Great price too and has enough slots for everything. I think I may go that route.

I think that's a nice board indeed. And you never know what you might need the second PCI-E slot for in the future

Pair it with the Silverstone Element PSU for $90 and you're set !
