The laptop in question's specs

I just reinstalled Windows XP for the 3rd or 4th time a couple hrs ago and got it all updated and everything....

I was surfing the OCN forums on it and then all of the suddent the touchpad stops respondng and about half-a-second later the screen just shuts off. no, the backlight didnt shut off, i looked in the light and the screen was blank.

I didn't seem to feel the HDD just stop spinning, or the fan shutff or anything that happend abruptly at that moment besides the screen going of but apparently it completly died(power stayed of tho). I presses Ctrl+alt+del repetendly, usually when u press it many times over u here a ding, no such sound. I just held down the power button for 4-5 secs and rebooted.

Now this isn't the 1st time i've had problems like this.

The reason why i reinstalled today wasbecause my last recent reinstall somehow went awry... WMP and the entire sys was freezing for 3-20 second intervals wile i was listening to som music. and overall was buggy and sluggish so i wiped 'er out and reinstalled.

OBTW the strange die-out has happend b4. Once or twice w/ the stock install. once or twice w/ my 1st reinstall. once w/ the one right b4 this reinstall. and of corse this time I speak of now.

I really hate this thing, it's slow only get like 1300-1500 PC marks in pc mark 05 and the battery life sucks but it's my only laptop and gives me alot of freedoml especialyl in combo w/ my dad's verizon broadband card .

I think your HDD is dying. Try to use another HDD in the laptop if you have.

great... this is kinda what i was thinking too. it's a fricken slow 4500RPM one too. I wouldn't mind replacing it my self but my dad invested in an extended warrenty and would probably be worried if i did that.

OH BOY! as i'm writing this almost the exact problem i'm talking about happend and i get an error msg from my ATI software talking about a VPU recovery

so maybe it's my POS integrated GPU?

edit: bolded stuff

i wouldn't say its a bad CD because i've used the CD(not the license as far as you need to kno ) to install on several PCs and hadn't had this problem...

could the drivers for the chipset/Integrated GPU be the wrong ones, or could the h/w be bad? I got the drivers for the GPU/chipset from AYI's site rather tahn off of Acer's(their site is slow and i figured ati's would be more up to date)

Wow, Acer laptops are remarkably rugged for one to have done this too you is strange. I have a laptop that got hit by lightning 2 years ago, old AMD P3 256mb ram kinda stuff doesn't even have a ATI or a Nvidia GPU in it (some SYS stuff.) And the big thing is it still works to this day, the ram access eventualy half-died now only registering 128Mb of ram but still running blazing fast (compared to Intel systems... even cheaper Intel systems in these modern times.) The dial-up networking does not work, broadband and wireless do though. The sound is out and 3D rendering is out of the question. But, remarkably, it works at a usable speed, never crashes, gets the job done remarkably well for its battle wounds. Anyways enough about my scorn soldier, for your problem i think there is something wrong with the power distribution.
