Quad core + full SLI + Good OC; need help

post #1 of 10

I'm putting together a component list for a friend who's throwing down $2k on a new rig. As much as I love AMD and am willing to fund the fight against intel, I know he doesn't share the same ethical stance. Therefore, I'm going intel quad-core.

He's not going to go SLI immediately, but I want him to have that avenue open. I also would prefer a mobo that can overclock the Q6600 as much as possible, preferably 3 GHz.

If you have any cooling recommendations that would be nice too.

if thats the cpu he wants, wait till july 22nd. the price is supposed to drop to $266, which is roughly half of what it costs right now. and also the new intel procs come out that day too, or around that time

EDIT::::
as for mobo, there are a few nice ones out there, evga's 680i, get the nf68 though. there is the asus striker extreme or asus p5n32.

EDIT::::
does he want air or liquid cooling?

Air cooling.

I was looking at this board:

and an Arctic Freezer 7 Pro.

i would steer clear of the foxconn, but thats just me. ya everyone is using that fan, but i like that new thermaltake v1. it looks sweet and is silent from what i hear.

Quad cores run hot to start with, watercooling is the best thing for them you Probley could run 3.2-3.4 right now I'm running at 3.2 comfortably, on air 3.0 might be hot with a Q6600.
Asus striker extreme or Asus p5n32 are the boards to get and are easy to overclock on.

You won't hit 3.0 on a Q6600 with a 92mm cooler like the Freezer 7 Pro. I love the AC F7 Pro, it's my favorite air cooler, but the Q6600 runs REALLY hot. Some people with Ultra 120's and Tuniq Towers have trouble hitting 3.0 stable, and those are top of the line air coolers.

That being said, if you wait until July 22nd, he can get a Q6600 + water cooling + SLI 8800GTX's without a problem at all. If not, he can get a Q6600 + SLI G80 but he won't hit 3.0 stable or safely until water, unless he gets a Tuniq Tower and some really good fans.

exactly what i was thinking.

Unless you have the money to go absolutely all out (I.E, water cooling) don't bother with quad cores until their price cuts. Then it will be even easier to go all out.

For the motherboard, I'd recommend an Asus P5N32-E SLi. For cooling, a good old Thermalright Ultra, or at least a Tuniq Tower.
