Opty Install: What Did I Miss?

Thread Starter
Just got a Opty 165 from a forum member. It should do 2.8GHz on stock.

I carefully removed the IHS and did not touch any of the surface-mounted capacitors. I dropped it into my DFI Expert mobo and it booted. The CPU was properly displayed. However, Windows XP and Vista will either freeze during loading or reboot the PC after 1 min. I tried reinstalling XP and it freezes during copy files.

It is not a heat issue since I remounted twice already and temps are in the mid-20s. I set everything to stock so it is not overclocking. MemTest86 made two successful passes. My BIOS is up-to-date. Cool N Quiet is disabled. What am I missing?

Possible hard drive problems?

Since memtest86 passes... that means the CPU survives that also... (although it doesn't have a lot to do).

You know that the heatsink is seated properly for 100%? Sounds like it's overheating and shutting down. Other than that, loosen the heatsink a bit. Sometimes when the heatsink is on too tight it will cause that (seriously).

This may sound weird, but is the socket lever housing taller than the actual silicon? That's how I cracked my 3700+ when I was checking for clearance and it turned out the HS was going to sit crooked.

Rip it a part down to a bare MoBo and then replug/seat everything and tell me what happens.

Hard Drives are working.

Temperatures in the BIOS are 27C and I left it sitting there for 1hr. Temps didn't change. I have reseated twice already. I can try again.

Socket lever is fine. My naked X2 3800+ is working fine in the system right now.

It is not a grounding issue. X2 3800+ works fine.

Have you tried to reset CMOS? Couldn't the old overclock on your 3800 interfere with the new CPU? I always thought that it could.

You most likely have to tweak some memory settings, mainly drive strength, data drive strength, Max Async Latency, Read Preamble, and also make sure all your others are loose enough. Also make absolutely sure that it's mounted right - just because idle temps are ok doesn't mean it won't jump to 60C+ when put under a slight load..

You might also try setting something like 200x5 with a 100 divider to see if anything is unstable at stock speeds, then move from there.
