Router Limit? Possible? Help!!!

Thread Starter
I have the D-Link DGL4300 and I'm wondering if I can limit the bandwidth on a computer on the network. My cousin whom I have never met before in my life moved in and ever since, my bandwidth has been sucked dry. I can't bring this up since it's against the ways of my family, but I really do want to do something about it, without making a big scene. PLEASE HELP!!! Thanks!

Hey, unfortunately, I'm not sure of any way to limit bandwidth through the router. You can filter in some routers the mac address of the computer to limit certain times to be online and things like that, but no way to monitor the bandwidth to my knowledge. If you can get access to the computer, there may be software you can put on it to control it. I have found a link I haven't tested yet. But I'm definately going to as this looks pretty sweet!
http://www.sofotex.com/MING-Bandwidt...ad_L39971.html But it appears that there it is just a 7-day trial period before registering @ $14.95.

Hmm...I don't think I can get onto his computer, since it has a fingerprint security thing. Is there any other way via hardware? Like some kind of device that his ethernet wire can go through to slow it down? The router is in my room, afterall. Thanks for the response!

I'm testing this monitor thing on my computer right now, I'll edit the post if it can slow down the traffic on other networked computers.

EDIT: It can't. It actually appears to be quite limited compared to what it stated it could do. Even for a trial version.

I've tried a couple different programs. The one I'm on now is http://bandwidthcontroller.com/download.html

But so far it's not so promising. It's the trial version for the Bandwidth Controller Standard Edition. But it definately has more features than the previous, and there is a freeware download for single user management...But that would be very tricky...And he'd have to not notice it down in the system tray.

In most cases you must install software on their computer if you would like to limit the bandwidth.

QOS is quality of service, Most routers have options so that, as said below you can limit traffic up\\down rates either by IP or Port number. Its primarily there so you can specify mission critical traffic on your network as a higher priority than say another system or another protocol\\port number. If you look through your routers menus there should be a QOS option some where in there. Easiest thing to do would be get your cousins IP and throttle his connection down to what ever speed you want.
