this is a tricky topic because game developers are given a huge budget to make their games these days. And besides anything else, most of that money is put into making an engine, which they use to make the game look and play as good as it can. This all means new physics technology, graphics technology etc etc

Its a tough world out there for gaming developers and in order to compete they have to make the game look as good as it can, and in the pc gaming category that doesnt always mean taking into account all the people with low-end machines. So the answer to this question is yes but they have to be.

I think a game should be designed to run at 60fps max settings at high res on the best rig avalible. So any current game should be running at 60 fps on a 8800Ultra Sli system with a qx6700.

It should also run fine at lesser settings on lesser rigs too however.

That's a good point , if all new releases run at say .... 75fps full settings , and they did that on a non overclocked highest spec PC , one that you or I could buy or build , then all PCs within the last 3 years or so could run it without any problems

Maybe a game developer will read your idea mate

I think that they need to spend some more time in the coding,Look at the 360 and PS3 they can play these games at high res high settings and there hard ware is a lot slower than anything that you would find in a high end 3000$+ gaming PC.the PS3 has a 7900 and it still plays obilvion better than my PC with a 8600GTS i mean ***,I know that my Video card isnt the best but it is quit a bit better than a 7900 like 2000 3mark 06 scores better,They need to take some time and optimize the code for each system not just the consoles.

then again, it's not like they are running seven instances of SVCHOST in the background... those consoles are being made to play those games..

I know that they are made to play games and that is it but they could still do a better job, there is now reason that a good PC should be as far behind conslose as they are.I know that a OS takes power but they dont even have these games muti threaded like they do for the console,The 360 has 3 cores and it know that the othere two dont just do nothing becuase that is a lot to handle for one core and theses are not hight end CPUs there.

Yes, but every PS3/360/Wii has identical hardware to the next PS3/360/Wii so they can take advantages of very specific hardware tweaks.

There are just way too many different hardware configurations a PC could have to tweak it so they just make the engine with some generic tweaks to it to get it to run at all playable on as much PC hardware as they can.

You can't really compare the clock speed of the CPUs in the 360/PS3 to the x86 architecture since they are, well...different architectures.

Again with the hardware compatability, on consoles there is a set hardware, but with PCs, you could have single, dual, quad or more cores. It takes more effort to program software to detect the hardware and then use it well.

Very good idea they should have different versios if the game deppending on what hardware you are using,They did it with half life 2 where it is set to 64 or 32bit,they should do this for things such as muti threading.

just imagine if a game utilizes all 4 cores of a quad core cpu and needs 4gigs of ram minimum and need atleast two 8800GTXs in SLI !!.that would be sick!
