External Wired Network?

Thread Starter
I am making a wired network for my family's house as my house is about 100 years old and does not lend itself well to wireless networks, My internet connection is barely good enough to play games and my mom's office comp takes FOREVER to load web pages.

So I am making a wired network to eliminate those probs by plugging in all the comps into the wireless router, so there is still a network for my mom and dad's laptops. But my question is whether or not I can run eithernet cables around the outside of my house safely or are they likely to get damaged?

It's best to run the cables inside the house. Outside they can get cracked from cold temperatures and ice, or if the wildlife decide to chew on them, then you will be replacing them a lot. If you have to run them outside then try and find a way to shield them, run them through some kind of piping, PVC or something like that. But defiantly try to run them inside the house if at all possible.

Run them inside if you can. Theres CAT cables that are designed for outdoors. Forgot what they call em. The insulation is thicker, much more resilient. Running them outside will work, you're just more prone for problems.

Depends where you live and it's up to your judgement. I live in the city and my girlfriend gets her internet from her cousin who lives on the floor below her. She has an ethernet cable coming out from the window downstairs and into her window. It has been like this for years and it's still working fine.

if you need to run cables outside it is best to buy Plenum Grade cat 5 and then put it in some kind of conduit. I have made it work between 2 houses using cat 5 run through a buried, sealed PCV pipe and seems to work real good .. also look around for a Sprint truck or a remote sprint office (or whoever does your POTS in your town) and ask someone for the guey stuff they put on phone line to keep the bugs off .. coat the cable in that stuff and its a lot more resistant to animals and the weather.

I wouldn't recommend it. It is much easier to go through your crawlspace or attic. If you absolutely must go outside, there are commercial grade cables that you can use called Plenum cables. Get plenum cables coated with Teflon. Put them in SEALED PVC pipes. Remember that the max length of Cat6 STP cables is about 328 feet before you need a repeater. You may want to create a "Star Bus" network to help you out the best.

For the Star Bus network you need:

2-Ethernet Switches (Preferably 1000Mbps)
1-Long cable to connect them

If you want to go this way then I will explain more how to set it up.

Hate to say it but no, Plenum Cables would be better. Also CAT 6 would work better for longer distances. Like I said Plenum CAT 6 STP in some pipe.

Thanks guys you have successfully confirmed all the worries I had about running cables outside so I am looking into how I can run cables inside my house. Chances of me being able to do it without professional help don't look so good though.
