I personally can't see the point in HD on a PC unless you have an extremely large monitor or a HDTV plugged in to it. Pixel count doesn't make much difference on a 17" monitor if you have eyes like mine. You can run higher res in games and still get a playable framerate with that 8800GTS 640, but I still don't think it will look much better at 1080p widescreen than it will at 1280x1024 unless you are running a 22" or better monitor.

My opinion would be to get the regular version UNLESS you plan on buying a blue ray/HDDVD player for your PC any time soon. I don't know everything about HDMI but I've heard that the picture and sound quality will be very bad if you don't run 100% HDMI equipment. If you do have the cash and plan on buying a HD player for your PC, go with an "HD ready" model, but with a bigger screen size as well if at all possible.

1000:1. Nice. I have a Viewsonic HD monitor, its only 700:1. You may have been looking at the same thing. Did it look anything like this?

Edit: Every viewsonic 19" seems to be 700:1. I don't care much, I only paid $200 for mine, so I'm happy.

rock on, yes that was it for €400 (reduced from 460) in my local shop, Im glad i got the hp, its so crisp and bright. one funny thing is i have my old trusted x600 running it (and at max res) i am waiting for a refund from scan (long story) to get an 88 or 29 series gfx card, then it will really bloom.
i have been without pc for so long that i dont know what the best deal is now...88 or 29?

Computers have ben able to produce hd content and upconvert standard dvd's to 720p or 1080i for quite a while now. About 2-3yrs ago the cheapest up-convert dvd players were a home pc. Yes hd is worth it, and most lcd's do support hd 720p/1080i. 1080p on the other hand while it does look better than 1080i, I personally do not think it is worth the price jump yet, but watch 1080p drop like a rock in price after the superbowl next year. Going from 480p to 720p/1080i is a huge upgrade, but from 1080i to 1080p is not nearly as large of an upgrade. in order for a monitor to be considered hd compatible it has to produce 720p or 1080i minimum. about 1.5-2 yrs ago hd standard was 480p.
