Trouble cooling my CPU!!!

Thread Starter
I am not sure if this is the proper place for me to pose my question about a cooling issue that has recently arisen. When I first put together my machine about a week ago I found myself running hot on the cpu, 50-55c idle, upper 70s under load. My motherboard was between 35 and 45. So I said forget my stock heatsink and I went for a Zalman ultra cool or whatever and I dropped 20 degrees right away. Then I proceeded to fly my pc to Minnesota for a trip and in the process the heatsink was moved off of the cpu a bit and I had to slide it back in to place. Still ran fine temperatures and mobo was just fine. I then went and moved it further to where I am now and was forced to put the heatsink back into place all over again. Now my cpu runs at 53 degrees when I am only running this website from firefox(I tested battlefield 2142 and hit 75c), and my motherboard is sitting at 59c. Could all of the moving of the heatsink dulled my thermal paste and I am needing to reapply? That is my first and most desired solution because I am broke and that is the cheapest. Also, is it possible to just plain cut a hole in my case to put in another case fan(there is not another place for one), because I need a way to cool my mobo as well? This is a lame question but will the cpu temp determine the motherboard temp to an extent? I am very new to the more complex workings of computers, so I am by no means a genius with them. I must apologize for the length and the amateur nature of my question. My specs are:
ASUS mobo, M2N32 SLi
2 GB DDR800 Corsair memory
256 mb BFG Geforce 7900
250 gb hd
That is just to give an idea of what I've got, and possibly an easier diagnosis.
LASTLY, what is a good way to get chords out of the way? They are all over and apparently they can create quite a disruption of air flow.
Thank you very much to whoever takes the time to read my ramblings, I am very desperate.

did you apply thermal interface material? Like arctic silver or something like it?

Sounds like you got some air bubbles in the thermal paste between the CPU and the heatsink. You should remove the cooler, clean, and re-apply right away.

Also for wire management, I usually use zip ties and route cables behind the motherboard tray.

Thanks
I applied whatever came with it, which seemend alright. Would the motherboard temp be affected by the temperature of the cpu though? I hope Comp USA has arctic silver, because that is the nearest computer place to me. No microcenter around here.

Motherboard temp could be affected by cpu temp depending on how close the "motherboard" sensor is to the CPU. Just work on one problem at a time, and get the CPU temp fixed first

Alright. Well, I've give the distance between the two, to be about 1.5 inches. My to-do list tomorrow is, buy zip ties and get some arctic silver. I must ad one last thing; cases...mine is a Xion Onyx...and I am debating upgrading to one with better airflow potential, this one seems iffy to me.

You let the heatsink spread it out.

The Xion is not one of the better cases for cooling, but you could have done a lot worse. In general, the larger the case, the cooler the case. Take a look at the Antec 900, Antec P180, Thermaltake Armor, or most any full tower. They're not cheap, but they have room for cable management and better air cooling solutions.
