Sufficient Cooling?

Alright, this week I have an 8800GTS 320mb and a Silverstone FM121 fan arriving from the Egg. My plan is to mod my side panel and have my FM121 sitting on the side of my GTS, blowing directly onto it (and my mobo's chipset, which is quite close). I will also have an exhuast fan taking away all of the air being pushed from the FM121.

This is more of me needing an assurance than anything. Will this cooling suffice for my card even after I oc it? That fan is pretty hefty; I suspect it will lower temps 5-10 degrees Celsius, but I just want to make sure that my expectations for a good overclock aren't too high.

I don't think it'll drop 5-10C, because at night, I have an AC blowing toward my rig with the side panel open and my card drops 12C.

And you may want to do this. Remove all your PCI trays, get a 80mm fan or a 120mm if that fits under your card and place it there. It'll help blow hot air that comes directly above the fan from the video card. If I don't do this, my CPU temp goes up by 3 ~ 4C.

Hmm, I dunno. From what I've read the FM121 is very powerful; I really hope it makes that much of a difference. If not, I can always turn up the fan speed on the GTS itself.

It'll also depend on your ambient temp. If it's cold, the fan would direct cold air at it, if it's hot, :x

I doupt it will drop so much as you expect except iof you will find a way the tornado fan to be blowing on the hole where the GPU cooler is through a pipe so all the air of the fan will pass through the heatsink and leave the back of the pc through the GPU exhaust. Having it blow generally on the GPU will only push the heat around your pc. Also the FM121 has 110 CFM which makes it one of the most powerful ones in the section of airflow but to get that airflow it means the noise will go up to 40db which means it will have great airflow indeed at top speed but you will need either to put you pc on another room or get some earplugs. Sadly no matter which fan you will put the rule "high airflow means high noise" will stay. I am nost sure if you know how to remove the stock cooler and replace it with an aftersales (i thinks thats what is called) one. If you could I would go for it since you would get even more than the 5-10 Celsius you expect. I myself have my 8800 OCed to 700/1800 because when I try to go higher randomly I get artifacts and sometimes pc stucks cause of the temps. I haven;t bought a HR-03 yet because I wait to see if the upcoming VF1000 will be better or not. Anyway if you will still go with the fan try to either make a custom pipe with paper or something. Wish you luck ^^

I bought a Zalman Fatal1ty FC-ZV9 yesterday. It's also pretty much the same cooler as the cheaper Zalman VF900.

Not sure if it fits the 8800GTS, but it lowered temps by about 25C under full load on my 7950GT.

Well, for anyone still interested, I got my GTS 320 today and installed the FM121 right on the side of it. My idle (at stock) was around 54-55; with the Silverstone I'm at 49 idle.

Haven't really taxed the card for a load temp yet, since I literally just got my card, but I imagine I still stay pretty cool.

Peace.

Nice indeed. Can i ask if the noise the FM121 produces is low enough to not make you crazy?

Well, considering my case was near dead-silent before I installed my 2 Antec's and my Silverstone, so it will take a slight bit of getting used to. The system is still pretty quiet though - I have an eight inch box fan that is considerably louder than my rig with all fans on low.

As for the FM121, it requires a fan controller of some sort. When I use my Vantec Nexus to push it to full the sound of just that single fan can be heard with my 5.1 surround on :3.

Also, those temps I posted last came from my friend's basement, where the ambiet temp. must have been around 60 degrees farenheit. Now that my rig is actually back at home, here are my warmer temps:

Idle - 54/55 C
Full Load (Oblivion) - 61 C
Full Load (ATiTool Artifact Testing) - 70 C

Without my FM121 I would be seeing about 3-4 degrees centigrade higher on all of those marks, so it still makes a worthy difference in my opinion. I am really not happy about hitting 70 on ATiTool, but my card is overclocking far beyond my expectations so it's alright. Overall, I am very content with the cooling I have setup now.

Mine would overclcok to 730/1050 but the temps raised a lot with the stock cooler so I dropped them to 700/900 which are enough good until I get my cooler for it. I hope zalman released the VF1000 soon so I can compare it with HR-03 soon.. Anywa thank for the info nice one Aura ^^
