Can RAID 1 be setup in IDE/ATA?

Thread Starter
I'm building a computer for my dad and he wants to setup RAID 1 to have a backup. I'm not positive, as I've only setup RAID using SATA, but is it possible to setup RAID 1 using IDE/ATA hard drives using the motherboard, without the use of a aftermarket raid controller?

Only when the motherboard supports PATA/IDE raid, which is not very common.

The Asus P5B Plus supports it
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131177

But it only supports two IDE devices...so the Optical drive better be SATA

Why not get two SATA drives??

Easy way to do raid on a single sata raid controler buy this for the pata drive and your done. Make the arrary the the onboard sata controler and only minior performance loss vs sata drive vs ata drive acting like a sata drive with the addater. Im currently have 2 of these on ata drives on a onboard raid controler in raid-0 no problems in creating an arrary so i dont see a problem with a sata drive and a ata drive with that addapter in a raid.

I'm trying to convince my dad to get two SATA drives, as they're faster anyways, but he had already bought a 250gb drive for $50 and isn't able to return it, so I was just checking to see if RAID 1 was possible. Looks like he'll have to get two SATA drives. Thanks guys!
