Quickie Barcelona Question

Thread Starter
Alright, I was just reading some thread and they were bashing the Barcelona again, because now that the 2900 has been released, it seems to be the next thing in line for people to attack...

And they were saying how Native quad core doesn't really have any performance benefits and how Intel's "Outdated FSB is still superior because it works just as good",
But I could've SWORN I heard somewhere that the Barcelona's cores, since they're native or something, will be able to be individually clocked at different speeds per core..

Now, I'm not positive of this, and I don't have any proof as of yet, but I'm looking for the the article now, and I wanted to know if anyone else has heard this, or can confirm this....

If I find anything I'll let you guys know

*Edit* Oh, and please don't start a flame war

No matter what everyone says, even when the barcelona core and the intel native quad core comes out, they will still be two very different architetures. Because of this, some will say one is better than the other.

I dont know what the true winner will be between them. I doubt anyone will know till they are both released. But you can be assured that there will be some things that perform better on one core vs the other. Just how the bulk of application performance will fall between the two remains to be seen.

I didn't say anything about which one will perform better, I wont be getting either most likely because I'm poor, so it makes no difference to me which one more 1337sauce, I was just wondering if anyone else had heard that Barcelona's cores will be individually clockable

I don't see how they could be individually clockable. I mean, dual cores today are native dual cores and we can't clock them individually. However, I do believe that you can set different voltages for each core. But that is not just a Barcelona feature, it's an AM2+ feature.

I'm fairly sure that is accurate with socket AM2+ and AM3 that voltages and clocks will be controllable for each individual core.

Again though, you will not be using Barcelona in your desktop - the Phenom processors will not use a Barcelona core, Barcelona is a socket 1207 Opteron

Barcelona, from what I've read, will have split power lanes, you'll be able to control the voltage to the memory controller, and to the cores independently. But, Barcelona will not clock the cores/core voltages independently. That doesn't happen till Budapest, the core in the AM2+ chips that will ship for desktop use. So, by the time it's released for us, we'll have CnQ that controls vcore and clockspeed for each core independently, as well as CnQ control of the voltage to the on chip memory controller.(again, from what I've been reading, don't ask for a link, I haven't the slightest)

definitely a lot of confusion right now - the thing is I really dont see the point of having 3 cores at 2.8ghz and 1 core at 2.6 or whatever unless say one core is unstable above 2.6 and the other 3 can go higher

none of you will be able to do anthing with the barcelona unless you whant to by lik 50+ of them and make a sever. What you should be talking about is the Phenom x4,I dont know why any one cares about the AMD and Intel server procs, there are very few peolpe that use then or need them.what you need to be doing is finding some benchmarks (if there are any) of the Phenom x4 and x2 vs the intel C2Ds and the C2 quads that is what i care about not the procs that i will never own that you need you to buy lik a hundred of just to use. Also does any one know about the FX procs and when they will come out.

I don't think that's the point. It's not an overclocking feature, it's a power management feature. I'm excited for it, it means more control for undervolting. / overclocking. What if one core needs a little more vcore than another? Granted, this will make overclocking quite the project, but it also means finer tuning.
