How much do you have/want to back up? If you're moving to Windows Vista, all
your programs should be re-installed. So, you can scrap them, but don't forget to backup any game saves, documents, files, etc that those programs created
If I were you, I'd pretty much back up everything else (music, movies, pictures) because for the cost of backup media, I'll be worth it.
Now, I know you don't want to buy an external hard drive, but they're so easy! They're very useful and you're sure to use it in the future! Other options are Cd-RW's, if you have a burner. Better yet, dvd's can hold several gigabytes of data...but trust me, get a USB 2.0 hard drive!
O, one more thing, you may want to back up your bookmarks.
