Budget Partial Upgrade

Thread Starter
I'm only buying a case, processor w/fan, and motherboard. The rest will be salvaged from my current rig and upgraded at a later date. There are a few criteria I would like my new rig to meet though.

Motherboard:
< $150
1333/1066MHz compatible so I can upgrade the processor down the road.
Don't need SLI now, but won't rule it out.
Moderately overclockable, but for <$150 I know you get what you pay for.
Currently looking at the GIGABYTE GA-P35-DS3R. Thoughts?

Processor:
< $250
Will consider either the E6320 1.86 GHz, E6420 2.13GHz, or E6600 2.4GHz.
Trying to keep this as cheap as possible and remember I'm coming from a P4 so any of them is better. Is the E6600 worth the extra money or can I overclock one of the others and get good results?

Case:
< $50
The CoolerMaster Centurion 5 looks like a good deal, but if I can find something as good and cheaper I'd like to look at it. I will be adding another harddrive eventually and it has to have at least two front USB ports. I don't care about firewire or audio ports in the front.

Thanks for your input.

Ok for the mobo either the DS3 or a P5N should work for you.

I would recommend spending the extra money for the E6600.

The CoolerMaster Centurion 5 is a great case. I would say get that for that price range.

Do yourself a favor, and get a LEAST the E6420. You'll love yourself when it comes to OCing. OCing a E63x0 is so annoying with the x7 multi.

Anywho, I'd get the Gigabyte DS3 or P5B-Deluxe if you can find it for that price, and a E6420, and I second the Centurion 5.

I'll go with the DS3 rev. 1.3 or 3.3, E6420 and Cent 5.

Quote:
The major differences between various revisions are:

* Rev. 1.0: FSB 1066MHz, one system fan header, ALC883 (Vista Basic Logo)
* Rev. 1.3: FSB 1333MHz, one system fan header, ALC883
* Rev. 2.0: FSB 1066MHz, three system fan headers, ALC888 (Vista Premium Logo)
* Rev. 3.3: FSB 1333MHz, three system fan headers, ALC888

I was looking at that MSI board the other day. The ABIT is interesting since it has a rebate now.

Does the 1.3 still work under Vista?
