Widescreen Video card

Thread Starter
I love my new 22" widescreen Viewsonic.
I love it so much, in fact, that I am selling my 7900GS on e-bay and am buying an 8800GTS.
(Auction title:
XFX GeForce 7900GS EXTREME VT71PUDP3 HD Video Card <---GO BUY IT RIGHT NOW!!!)

The question:
I have read recommendations that if you are looking at a resolution of 1600x1200, you should get the 640 MB version for $80 more. My monitor is 1680x1050 which has 10% less pixles than a 16x12 monitor. Do I get the more expensive card with more RAM or will the 320 MB version be fine?
I have been running the 256 MB 7900GS without too many issues. I want to move to DX10 (I love company of heroes!) and thought now is a good time since I could still fetch a great price for my 7900GS.

Any thoughts? THANKS!!!!

See benchmarks for CoH DX10 patch:

The 1680x1050 FPS are interesting between the 320MB version and 640MB version, a 20% increase by 640 MB yet both cards are under 30 FPS with all eye-candy turned on.

At 1680x1050, 320MB will have alot less performance than the 640MB versions under DX10 in vista.

Example: COJ Benchmark, the 320MB gets 1-12FPS on max while the 640MB gets 9-28.

If you have vista, or are planning to get vista, get the 640MB version.

320MB Texture memory simply isn't enough for that resolution and all the DX10 eye-candy.

EDIT: I'd also like to throw in that the current DX10 performance is caused by bad drivers, I know someone with NDA drivers and the DX10 games are running about 2.5x faster on them compared to the latest 158.45 Betas.

Those are impressive numbers. I am trying to avoid spending the extra $80 but I probably should. I am still thinking like I am using the 1280x1024 17" monitor.

No Vista yet, but I will be getting it as soon as I begin to hear drivers are getting better.

My single card score in vista is only 120 marks shy of my XP score. (Thats about as good as it will get because vista uses alot more processes. )

However my SLI score is only 15,400 (In XP it is 16,400). Last month my SLI score was 14,400 on the older drivers. So the performance is slowly getting better.

The DX10 drivers ATM are very immature and basically are giving DX10 a bad name.

I have seen some DX9 vs DX10 screenshots from COH and the difference is impressive. Hopefully the driver folks at nVidia are working full time for us. Given the huge proliferation of DX10 cards, it should be a short while before DX10 is as fast as DX9. (I hope!)
