DVD/GAME Backup/COPY Software... legality?

Thread Starter
So I want to be able to back up my DVD library as they fall out of the cases and what not and are slowly getting scratched... same with my games...

I don't know the real legality of this type of thing, everything seems to be "oh crap its copy protected; can't do anything".

On top of that - I really wish I could find something free, that would backup/copy my dvds/games...

Any help with this would be much appreciated

It is usually legal to back up for archival purposes, and usually only one copy. DVD decryptor is on the fine line, while it shouldn't be illegal, it is defeating copy protection which I think according to the millenium copyright act or something is illegal.

As long as you have the original and don't give away the copies to other people its perfectly legal

I have all my DVD's/Games backuped on my external HDD along with all my music backup

Technically, if the DVD has copy protection (mostly movies), you cannot circumvent (like decrypting the DVD) them except in a few cases such as nonprofit, educational fundation etc.

Here are some exemptions:

Computer programs and video games distributed in formats that have become obsolete and that require the original media or hardware as a condition of access, when circumvention is accomplished for the purpose of preservation or archival reproduction of published digital works by a library or archive. A format shall be considered obsolete if the machine or system necessary to render perceptible a work stored in that format is no longer manufactured or is no longer reasonably available in the commercial marketplace. (A renewed exemption, first approved in 2003.)
Computer programs protected by dongles that prevent access due to malfunction or damage and which are obsolete. A dongle shall be considered obsolete if it is no longer manufactured or if a replacement or repair is no longer reasonably available in the commercial marketplace. (Revised from a similar exemption approved in 2003.)
Literary works distributed in ebook format when all existing ebook editions of the work (including digital text editions made available by authorized entities) contain access controls that prevent the enabling either of the book’s read-aloud function or of screen readers that render the text into a specialized format. (Revised from a similar exemption approved in 2003.)
Computer programs in the form of firmware that enable wireless telephone handsets to connect to a wireless telephone communication network, when circumvention is accomplished for the sole purpose of lawfully connecting to a wireless telephone communication network. (A new exemption in 2006.)
Sound recordings, and audiovisual works associated with those sound recordings, distributed in compact disc format and protected by technological protection measures that control access to lawfully purchased works and create or exploit security flaws or vulnerabilities that compromise the security of personal computers, when circumvention is accomplished solely for the purpose of good faith testing, investigating, or correcting such security flaws or vulnerabilities. (A new exemption in 2006.)

i have done a lot of reading on this subject...

here's the deal. I'm the USA at least, it is illegal to circumvent copy protection on copyrighted DVD movies. But, it is legal to have a backup of that same DVD...

You cant legally make the backup if there is a protection method on the disk, but once you have the backup made, it's perfectly leagle to have it...

Kinda strange if you ask me...

And all this is still a huge gray area, so don't be afraid of the feds knocking your door down because you copied all your DVD's...

Yeah if you can do bit by bit copy of the DVD its legal, but the companies making the software and hardware make it so that you can't do bit by bit copies of the DVD, but to copy it otherwise is illegal...

DMCA really should be repealed, or at least greatly changed...

For the software aspect, DVD Shrink works great - especially paired with Nero.

This worked great for a DVD copy- will this do something different than Nero did trying to copy a game dvd? Nero copied it fine, you can install and what not from the disc, but then when you go to use the copy, it asks for original disk
Will DVD-Decrypter do something additional?
I'd like to use all backups and save the originals safely.
PS You got reps hehe

See the post above this, I am not sure how to get around it.
What does DVD shrink do different? Is it free as well?
