Risks of overclocking

I know with old graphics cards, the risks included simply burning out your card permanently. Is that different with these fancy new cards, with their fans and temperature gauges, that might shutdown automatically rather than reheat? What are the risks of overclocking, more specifically, an 8800 GTS? And what are the rewards of it; does it overclock well, or not even noticeably (especially since it overkills many game requirements)? Just a bit curious

A thing to consider with the 8800GTS is how hot it is to begin with. A lot of 8800s run upwards of 70C under load at stock. I think if you're worried about card life or longevity you might want to look into the Thermalright HR-03 Plus cooler for it, and then overclock.

I don't think that there's a real risk of toasting the VID card for many reasons. First of all, OCing if done properly can't jump the temperatures from normal ones to the red hot zone very fast. At one point you'll see for example that your card surpasses 80°C and you must stop. nVidia cards have safety mechanisms that halts them at 120°C, so unless the temperature grows faster than the sensor can sense it (30°C/s or more) the risks are slim.

Volt modding can make the risks increase. When you up a Vcore, the temps grow significantly faster, so there is a real risk that the growth of the temperature is faster than the activation of the safety net. On a non-vmodded card there's no real risk imo.

Thanks drago, that's what I needed to know. It'll be nice to be overclocking with a card that has a temperature sensor , but I just realized this is the ATI thread. Woops. lol
