Is this tearing? (game)

When I have Vsync off, I get around 400 frames on FEAR, but when I shoot and lights come out of the gun and I see lines going from left to right.

When it's off, I don't see it.

This is tearing, correct?

tearing is when you can see the images being layed out at the wrong intervals lol so the lower half is different to the top half.

I didn't get that. It looked like 4 papers overlapping each other and you can see the margin lines.

not true i had a comp that use to tear every movable object on screen untell i turned on vsync

Yes, it's tearing. Just keep Vsync on ... 60 FPS is enough

It's not always the top and bottom half.

Tearing is when the monitor refreshes its image with an incomplete data buffer from the video card. It depends on how the video card is redrawing the scene.

I leave vsync on because my monitor's refresh rate is 85 Hz, so 85 fps is good enough for me.

Basically, DuckieHo said that the graphics card outputs more frames than the monitor can 'handle'. Althought it CAN handle as much as you want, the refresh rate doesn't allow it always and sometimes you get tearing as a results - this is how I've always thought of it anyway.
